C.39.QR:4 - Solution
Keep the original question available beside the partial work. Establish the result of that work at its actual scope, justify the transition back to the subject, and compare the available result with what the original use requires. Develop the missing connection or contribution. Arrange these operations where their answers can change action.
C.39 supplies construction of an obtaining way; the subject practice supplies its inference and composition rules. C.41 supplies the attention aid and its use. The operations below connect those contributions for this recurring return.
C.39.QR:4.1 - Recover the question independently of the proposed answer
Read the initiating request and applicable clarifications. Recover the subject, the question about it, the result needed by the recipient and the conditions that make that result sufficient. Include a source-coverage commitment, time horizon or authority boundary when it affects the answer. An example in the request can locate a difficulty while leaving the assigned scope broader.
Distinguish the actual requirement from the author’s proposed decomposition or solution. Derive an initial expectation from the requested use and competent subject knowledge. A proposal to explain a discipline needs its organizing problems, principles, Methods and relations at a suitable depth. A proposal to restore a service needs the relevant functioning and operating conditions. These expectations have different substantive bases.
Keep consequential uncertainty explicit. Obtain a clarification when materially different readings require an authorized choice; meanwhile continue the content required under the viable readings. A provisional expectation can change as the subject becomes better understood. Explain that correction and preserve the original commitment unless its authorized basis also changes.
A reviewer at risk of inheriting a narrowed question forms this expectation before relying on the candidate’s outline or earlier verdict. The expectation states indispensable content or conditions, not a second complete solution.
Questions: What must become understood, decided or obtainable? For whom and under which conditions? What boundaries were actually assigned? Which expectations come from the subject, and which are only a proposed way?
C.39.QR:4.2 - Identify the relation used by the partial work
Name the original subject and the working construction in ordinary subject language. Establish how work on the latter can contribute to the former. Use the specific relation needed for the next judgement.
| Relation used | Grounds needed for the return |
|---|---|
| Case and kind; narrower and broader kind | Membership criteria or a directed generality relation, and separate grounds for any claim about the wider range. C.3 and C.3.1 supply the relevant distinctions. |
| Constituent and whole | The subject’s composition, interactions and shared conditions. A.14, B.1.5, C.2.1 and C.20 govern different kinds of whole. |
| Method and performed work | The reusable operation, this occurrence, performer, inputs and conditions. A.3.1 and A.15.1 distinguish them. |
| Description, diagram or model and its subject | What is preserved, omitted or introduced, the correspondence being used, and the rule permitting the proposed inference. C.37 supports representation choice; C.29 supports mathematical model use. |
| Sample and target population | The selection process, target and conditions of the statistical inference supplied by the relevant statistical practice. |
| Measure and valued result | What the measure tracks, under which conditions, and which value judgement remains. E.13 supports the return from a proxy to the value it is meant to serve. |
| Compressed and fuller account | The questions and meaning retained, consequential omissions and the return to the fuller basis. A.6.3.CSC supplies that scoped compression. |
Several relations can occur in the same work. A model of a component is a representation of that component; the component’s relation to a system is composition. Keep both when the conclusion traverses both. An example can be an instance of a kind and illustrate an operation, with different consequences for each use.
Tracing a relation back identifies its other participant. Inferring a property of that participant requires an applicable rule. A correspondence can warrant selected inferences while leaving others open. For a many-to-one abstraction, recover the omitted distinctions when the returned question depends on them. The subject practice determines whether a deduction, empirical inference, construction or qualified analogy supplies the needed warrant.
Questions: What are the actual participants and relation? Which claim is being carried across it? What permits that inference under these conditions? What has been left out?
C.39.QR:4.3 - Establish what the performed work obtained
Examine the actual contribution and its grounds. State the claim or result it supports, its subject and conditions, and what was supplied by another source, performer or tool. A reader’s additional construction can be useful; identify it as that reader’s contribution when deciding what the received material supplied.
Carry a conclusion to the original subject only through the applicable relation and inference from section 4.2. If that inference is unsupported, repair it, obtain the missing ground or retain the narrower warranted conclusion. Preserve sound local work.
Then make the distinct comparison with the original task. Ask whether the result now available supplies the required answer, explanation or ability to continue. For example, a valid estimate of a system’s load can support sizing while leaving a requested operating arrangement undeveloped. Conversely, an adequately supported narrow estimate may fully answer a request for that estimate.
Keep the two conclusions explicit when they differ: what is established about the subject, and what part of the assigned work is thereby completed. Truth, membership, fidelity, coherence, coverage, usability and beneficial effect require the grounds appropriate to each judgement.
Questions: What did this work establish, about what, and under which conditions? What is justified about the original subject? What required result remains unavailable?
C.39.QR:4.4 - Reconstruct the encompassing result
Compare the result now available with the expectation recovered in section 4.1. Examine the relations needed to obtain the encompassing result as well as the contributions themselves. Follow inputs and intermediate outputs, shared conditions, alternatives and returns at the level where they affect the requested use.
Use C.39:4.2–4.5 to construct a missing obtaining way or join. When the requested result is an explanation of an organized subject, C.39.WA develops its common grounds and organization, then brings those grounds back to choices about the parts. A whole can contain several independently usable Methods; a connected account need not force them into one sequence.
For promised source recovery, apply F.0.2.RC to the promised contribution and scope. For a system or service, use its engineering and operating methods to establish the relevant whole conditions. Where the missing contribution is capability, equipment, access or authority, obtain or revise that support through its responsible practice.
Distinguish synthesis, generalization and abstraction. Connecting contributions to obtain a result, widening a claim’s warranted range, and selecting distinctions for a description are different operations. Choose the one the gap requires, and explain its result. A wider field name cannot supply a missing connection.
Follow a changed encompassing condition to the contributions that relied on it. Follow a consequential finding in a contribution back to the encompassing account. Retain unaffected uses on the basis of their actual dependencies.
Questions: Which organization or connection does the requested result need? What governs the choice and change of the contributions? What missing content or support prevents the return?
C.39.QR:4.5 - Perform the useful continuation and settle its reach
Choose the continuation from the actual gap: develop content, correct the relation or inference, recover a source, obtain support, compare an alternative way, or seek an authorized change of the task. C.11.DUA compares further inquiry or change with continuing on the available basis, including the effort of learning, coordination, execution and displaced work.
Complete the selected contribution and return its result through sections 4.2–4.4. A changed original requirement can require a different comparison; make that change recoverable. A missing contribution keeps the corresponding requirement open even when another useful part is finished.
At a handover or acceptance decision, give the recipient the warranted result, the use it now supports and the consequential remainder. Reconcile several returns through their actual joins and shared conditions. C.41.SR supports this reconciliation. The recipient can accept a sufficient result, request a definite missing construction, retain a qualified partial result or decide a justified stop within its authority.
The work ends for this occasion when that decision is supported at the requested scope and the chosen continuation has actually been performed or transferred to its responsible recipient. A partial return can complete an assigned subtask while leaving the encompassing assignment open.
C.39.QR:4.6 - Put the return into ordinary work
Use the questions where a difference in their answers can change the work:
- Before a consequential decomposition or representation choice, recover the original question and the contribution expected from the smaller work.
- At a scope-changing inference or handover, establish what the partial result warrants and what the recipient still needs.
- Before a whole-result judgement, compare actual content and joint conditions with the original requirement.
- After an interruption or a changed condition, recover the affected connection and continue from it.
C.41.OF arranges the occasion, access and competent participation. C.41.UA connects obtaining an answer, deciding what to do and performing the action. Keep the subject material and these operations available at that occasion; a remembered slogan may be insufficient when several relations are being traversed.
Use another suitably competent reader when independence or an unprompted initial judgement is needed. Give that reader the original question and necessary subject grounds before earlier verdicts or a suggested defect. Freshness can expose an inherited narrowing; domain competence supplies the grounds for the expectation. Select the arrangement by the judgement required, and reuse sound prior results at their actual scope.
For recovery after interruption, A.15.10 returns the purpose, operative method, established results, unfinished work and changed conditions to a useful continuation. For people and AI agents, examine separately recognition of this difficulty, performance of the relevant operations, and benefit in the receiving work. Reopen the aid when it repeatedly fails to expose a consequential loss or creates work without improving the answer.
