The method lets a family evolve while keeping present work supportable. It can also justify separating offerings or retaining a bounded old profile.

The cost is transition work and sometimes temporary complexity. An explicit support tail may make a proposed improvement unattractive at the current volume. That is a useful decision, not a failure to modernize.
