Foundational.Reference:2.3 - The whole, its continuity and its boundaries
The characteristic obtained through these relations is the ability to construct and revise a jointly interpretable, warranted and obtainable result while keeping its different grounds recoverable. Result includes a construction, explanation, proof, algorithm, model or notation, not only a number returned to an application. The appropriate grounds depend on what is claimed: mathematical validity does not establish physical adequacy; a correct algorithm may be too costly; a physical account does not supply a usable expression; and an intelligible expression does not establish the truth of its contents. A pure proof makes no physical-adequacy claim unless one is actually introduced.
This characteristic belongs to the connection. Several individually adequate results can fail to compose because they concern different observations, discard different distinctions or permit incompatible operations. Conversely, a changed contribution need not defeat the whole: its consequences can be followed to the affected model, algorithm, expression or premise while unaffected work remains usable. For example, an oscillator’s numerical error can call for another approximation without rejecting its physical law; a measurement that defeats an idealization can require a new physical or modeling premise that more accurate computation cannot provide. The branches supply the distinct constructions and returns.
The field’s identity rests on continuing these five kinds of contribution and their constructive relations. New axioms, physical theories, model families, algorithms, notations, media and specialist suppliers can change without changing that identity. They must still let users recover the relevant meanings, warrants, obtaining conditions and consequences of revision. A replacement for a constituent contribution has to do that work in the connected field. Removing the ability to develop models or notation as primary results, or retaining them only as unexamined inputs to calculation, would change the declared whole. So would replacing this subject by all intellectual work or by the realization of engineered systems.
Field membership does not require every branch to contribute to every task. It also does not require one person to master every method, one publication to duplicate every supplier, or each constituent discipline to belong to only one larger field. A particular use establishes a use relation. Membership in another composite discipline would additionally require that discipline’s own subject, constituent knowledge and practice, and obtaining relations; a link or folder location cannot establish it.
The same field is compatible with a larger assembly for formal and empirical inquiry. Consider an assembly whose subject is constructing, examining and revising knowledge claims and the means by which they can be expressed and obtained. It combines this complete five-branch field with research design and evidence criticism, and with the specialist investigative practices needed for its questions. Its boundary includes a proof, a revised physical account, a new model, an algorithm or a notation as a research result; it does not require an engineered realization.
This assembly needs Foundational Thinking’s connected contribution, not just five independently supplied answers: a changed claim or observation must remain connected to what its expressions mean, what its model retains, what warrants its conclusions and how a result can be obtained. Research design determines which rival accounts an inquiry can distinguish; these formal, physical and computational conditions can show that the proposed design cannot answer its question. Conversely, actual research material can defeat an observation model, physical premise or inference and return the revision to the affected construction. The Research Method Practice contributions to design, operationalization, criticism and revision explain the other side of this connection.
Compatibility preserves the whole described here. All five primary subjects, their constructive relations and the ability to develop each contribution remain available; a particular inquiry need not use all five. The exposed interfaces include interpreted constructions, warrants and limits, model correspondences, obtaining procedures and the consequences of changing them. They preserve the distinction between mathematical validity, physical adequacy, computational obtainability and usable expression. Changes of theory, technique or supplier can preserve the assembly when these meanings and return relations continue. An arrangement that accepts only computed numbers, subordinates every model and notation to physical prediction, or turns research results directly into authority to intervene does not admit this same whole unchanged. This establishes compatibility with the described possible assembly, not an assertion that another established discipline or published Suite already contains it.
A narrower relation is also useful. Computational mechanics can obtain selected mathematical, modeling, physical, computational and notational contributions together with specialist mechanics and experimental practice. Such a profile can return a failure to the contribution it defeats without importing the entire field. That supply relation is not evidence that Foundational Thinking in its full scope is a part of computational mechanics or Engineering.
The boundary also leaves useful neighboring fields distinct. Research Method Practice can supply empirical inquiry; Explanation Design can supply an explanation for a particular recipient; Human Capability Development can supply representative practice and transfer work; general methodological development in Core can change how contributions are obtained. Financial modeling, operations management, music and movement can provide subject questions or use the results. These relations do not absorb the complete supplying or receiving fields into Foundational Thinking. In particular, general argument recovery in Section 3.11 is a Core contribution used here, not a sixth discipline or a claim to cover all reasoning.
