MDPE.11:4.5.3 - Keep freedom when the passage changes
Change the accent from the midpoint of an interval to a later subdivision, then use a new short sequence of accent places. Keep the selected pulse and required accent character. A performer who can only repeat the first joint pattern still has a useful pattern, but not the range this new passage needs. If the musical reference changes tempo, relocate both the supporting events and the accents within the new intervals. Retaining old absolute accent times would lose their musical relation.
When these choices cannot yet be performed, MDPE.10:4.6 develops the needed capability from this construction. During an occurrence, use an already available variant within the agreed material. Omitting an optional tap, as in :4.5.1, can solve that occurrence’s problem; a phrase that requires the tap still needs a means of performing it.
