MDPE.Application:5.3.4 - Make granularity a declared comparison choice
Choose enough detail to distinguish the action-changing alternatives. More detail is not invariably more useful.
Suppose a response begins within the first beat after a partner’s cue. A coarse account records only that fact. Two performances with delays of 0.25 and 0.75 beats both satisfy it. A finer receiving task requires the response within 0.5 beats: the first qualifies and the second does not. This is a constructed timing example, not a universal criterion of good partnering.
A reader who extracts only “within one beat” has not recovered the finer condition. A recording that cannot reveal the cue does not support either delay estimate. Conversely, when the only decision concerns whether a phrase has a response at all, sub-beat distinctions may add work without changing the answer.
State what each comparison retains. A coarser classification can group distinct methods; a finer observation can distinguish performances of the same Method. Neither operation determines a general hierarchy of styles or proves that one performer has greater mastery overall.
