STR.18:4 - Solution
Use this account when the answers to what is worth pursuing, how it could be obtained, who can contribute and what can be committed no longer fit together. The strategizing mantra recalls their connection:
Strategic question → worthwhile contribution → explained way → feasible contributions and means → justified choice and commitment → realization, use and renewed questions.
These phrases unfold the reasoning for attention and discussion; they are not stages that every undertaking must complete in this order. A technological possibility can precede a settled contribution. A new capacity limit can require revising a commitment without reopening the evidence for the direction. An adequate answer to one bounded question can finish the present work. The explanation below retains these alternatives and returns; STR.Reference:4 explains the related contributions of the language.
The strategic question establishes whose situation and future contribution are at issue, what changed, and which answer would matter now. A company, professional practice and public service need not judge worthwhile results alike. A proposed course, product or platform is initially a possible means; its attractiveness does not establish a useful contribution. STR.1 and STR.3 bound the question, while STR.5 connects an unsettled problem to a proposed contribution and a direction. An available technical possibility can enter through STR.17 instead. The consequence for the recipient, not the existence of an appealing means, gives the proposal a reason to be pursued.
An explained way then connects that contribution to the actions, intermediate results and conditions that could obtain it. Naming the desired outcome does not supply this explanation. STR.6 can reuse an adequate way, construct a missing one or develop useful material before its future contribution is settled. The way and the receiving problem can change together: a diagnostic technique may suggest a different useful question, while a changed question can invalidate its earlier comparison. Return the changed question or missing construction; neither a more detailed promise nor a list of initiatives repairs that gap.
Feasible contributions and means connect the explanation to what can actually be performed. STR.8 asks which technical results, capabilities, access, support and organizational arrangements the contribution needs. STR.14 and STR.16 relate their simultaneous demands, independent purposes and possible common provision. Separate statements that each initiative is affordable can conceal the same specialist or resource being promised several times. An available service can supply a needed result without everyone acquiring its method. A description of that service does not make its provider available. Use the relevant professional answer, with its conditions, rather than treating a framework title as delivered capability.
A justified choice compares the whole alternatives and their consequences, including displaced work and the cost of keeping later options open. STR.9 and STR.10 support that comparison; STR.7 supplies further inquiry only when its result can change the choice enough to earn its burden. The result may be sufficient evidence, a narrower direction, bounded preparation or a justified stop. STR.11 keeps the recommendation distinct from the authorized commitment. Agreement that an option looks preferable does not allocate another participant’s time, grant data rights or make incompatible commitments coexist. Contributions and permissions must have an actual basis.
Realization and use close a different question from choosing well. Obtain the professional work needed to produce the contribution, establish the conditions for its use and observe the consequence on which the strategic claim depends. A finished preparation can support a later decision without being a functioning service. In SensorCo’s connected application, four authorized preparation days can improve the cost and trial-design answer; they authorize neither the trial nor the twelve-month service direction. Adverse costing can make that preparation useful by supporting device-only continuation. Missing costing leaves a question open. STR.12 connects the resulting observation to the particular direction, assumption or commitment it changes.
The mantras meet through these actual dependencies. The operational mantra (OPS.23) can expose a release, capacity or service condition that changes strategic feasibility. The elegance account (Engineering.Reference:0.6) can change the avoidable work and means included in an option. Neither determines whose purposes should prevail. When the chosen contribution requires a system change, the system reasoning in FPF A.1.STM connects that project to the conditions of its realization and use. Preserve an adequate answer and return only where a changed condition affects it.
Continuing an operating strategy, learning a known method and open-ended development remain different undertakings. When development is the purpose, a resolved problem and acquired capability can open a further attainable problem; use the connected development account (Library.Reference:9) and FPF C.40.OD for that broader construction. The strategizing mantra helps keep direction, means and commitments coherent within it; it does not turn every revision or successful execution into development.
STR.18:4.1 - Construct a jointly defensible answer and a selective return
Begin with whichever answer is available and consequential. Follow it toward the proposed contribution and back toward what would obtain it. For each dependency, recover the relation rather than just its label: which result is needed, who or what can supply it, under which conditions and by when? If a new means has no settled use, develop and compare candidate contributions; if the contribution is settled but the way is not, construct that missing explanation. STR.5 and STR.6 supply these different moves.
Compare the assembled account with its serious alternative at the same scope. Retaining current work, making a smaller commitment or stopping can be adequate alternatives. A different purpose requires an explicit judgement, not a disguised improvement score. Obtain a missing professional answer only when it can change the receiving choice. A recommendation, an authorization, actual realization and an observed consequence remain different results.
When a condition changes, identify the claim it defeats or leaves uncertain and trace the dependent choice. For example, loss of data access can block one diagnostic option without invalidating observed customer difficulty; an improved device can remain useful while a service proposal lacks incident cover. Revise the affected way or commitment, retain independent evidence and return to the responsible decision holder. The account can finish with that bounded judgement; unresolved wider ambitions do not force another cycle now.
Recognition does not establish assurance. Incompatible answers justify using this Method, but a claim about demand, technical performance, financial viability or a participant’s authority needs its own support. Preserve those qualifications in the whole judgement. An attractive diagram of connections does not supply them.
