B.5.EA:4.4 - Separate intended meaning from the claim made with it
Distinguish three questions:
- Can the participant use this expression to continue what they were trying to say?
- Can the intended recipient recover the relevant distinction?
- What grounds support a conclusion about the situation beyond that expression?
The first can be answered through the participant’s continued account. For the second, invite a relevant interpretation or next move when shared use still needs checking. For the third, use the grounds appropriate to the claim and its consequences. C.11.DUA helps decide whether obtaining more information could change the action enough to warrant its cost.
If a new observation defeats the account, B.5.RR revises the affected reasoning. Preserve what remains useful. A formulation can be faithful to a person’s experience while their diagnosis of its cause is mistaken.
