C.43:4.8 - Direct development through related methods and capabilities
The controlled continuation can change what an agent will be able to do, including how it obtains further development. The agent may be a person, an AI system, a team or an organization. Begin with the wanted change in possibilities: which work or problem is beyond the attained repertoire, why it matters, and what would make it attainable. C.40.OD supplies the full construction of open-ended development. The present operation connects its changing possibilities to observation, recommendation, choice and intervention.
Recover the achieved configuration. Include the agent’s available Methods and capabilities, retained assistance, instruments, authority, obligations and conditions of use. Use actual work to establish what the agent can obtain under those conditions. A record of training or a recommender’s estimate can inform this inquiry; the resulting estimate must say what performance and assistance it represents. This starting account makes a useful existing capability available as a means of developing another, through C.40.JD:4.2, without presuming the capability still to be acquired.
Find what must change in the connection to the wanted result. Reason backward from that result to the required contributions and forward from the achieved configuration to what it already makes possible. The unmet connection can concern a constituent Method, the way adequate Methods are combined, an unavailable capability, access to help, or the allocation of work and authority. This identifies where an intervention could change the continuation; construct and compare the resulting alternatives before selecting one. For instance, additional practice can develop an absent judgement; a changed division of work can instead obtain that judgement from someone already capable. The two interventions can deliver the same immediate answer while leaving different capabilities and dependencies.
The method stack contains several relations. Recover the relation that makes a proposed change consequential:
| Related structure | Connection to recover | How it guides an intervention |
|---|---|---|
| Constituent and encompassing Methods | What contribution a constituent Method supplies to the performance and result of an encompassing Method | Replace or reconstruct the constituent, then derive the consequences for the encompassing uses through B.1.5.RS. |
| Work and its performers | Which occurrences realize the Methods, with what order, overlap, resources and authority | Change allocation, timing or cooperation and compare the whole performance arrangement through C.32.MWA.PP. |
| A Method and the Method used to develop it | How development work constructs, qualifies or changes the former Method | Improve that development work when its result or burden limits the receiving Method; this relation need not be parthood. |
| Capability and its provision | What the agent can perform or organize with the retained external contributions | Develop the holder, obtain a contribution, change the instrument or combine these through C.40.JD. |
| Observation and decision at different scopes | Which local differences matter to an encompassing choice, and which aggregate hides them | Change the observation or its use; apply C.30.ILC and C.32.MLAO when the conflict actually crosses the identified scopes. |
| Changes on different timescales | How long an effect takes to become observable, usable and retained | Coordinate practice, feedback, deployment and reconsideration by those delays rather than by organizational rank. |
One organization can remain the developing subject while it changes a working Method, the preparation of its performers and its way of choosing further development. These changes do not require one universal hierarchy. A service provider can affect an encompassing result without becoming part of its recipient. A Method that improves another can have that Method as its subject rather than its constituent. Explain the actual relation before using a change at one position to predict another.
Construct a complete intervention. Explain the causal and constructive connections: the proposed work changes a named subject; that change makes a contribution obtainable; the contribution enables receiving work; the receiving result changes further possibilities. Include the preparation, assistance and transition that make those connections feasible. Retain sufficient parts. If a better instrument removes a difficult operation, reconsider whether acquiring that operation still serves the development aim. If the aim is independent judgement, having an external expert supply every judgement may meet today’s delivery need while leaving that aim untouched.
Recommend and choose from the attained position. A development recommender performs the work of forming grounded advice about these alternatives. Its useful result can be a preferred direction, several incomparable directions, a discriminating trial, a request for a missing contribution, or an explained reason to retain the current practice. Use C.40.DC to construct the directions and C.11.CRC to compare their finite contributions; the actual chooser uses C.11 with the affected interests and authority.
The comparison is marginal in the sense of starting from what is already attained. It includes the best obtainable competing use of scarce means, the transition burden, complementary resources, retained assistance and future options. Buying a result, acquiring a capability and changing the need for that capability can all be serious alternatives. At a later stage, compare from the then-current configuration: capability already acquired and help already secured change what the next intervention can obtain. Do not repeatedly credit the whole programme’s gain to each later step. The economic specialization in §4.7 explains the relation to opportunity cost, finite changes and local marginal measures.
Observe the performed development and its receiving use. A recommendation passes through an actual choice, available means and work. Recover what was done and under which conditions, then establish what the receiving work obtained, what the agent can now do with the retained help, and what the attempt revealed about the Method and provision. These are the connected results of C.40.JD:4.3. The mechanism of acquisition remains specific to the agent and subject: human practice, machine training, software modification and organizational learning can share this signature while requiring different bodies and evidence.
Use the resulting evidence at the relevant return. Revised evidence can change the recommender’s estimate while leaving capability unchanged. Changed practice or assistance can change capability; a redesigned working Method can change what capability is needed. A changed purpose can change the preferred continuation. Selecting among those returns is the same dependency-based operation as §4.6, now applied to development. Reconsider the recommender or the development Method itself when repeated misdiagnosis, ineffective interventions or excessive burden make it the consequential object of change. Test the proposed improvement through the development it helps obtain.
Continue from the new possibility. A completed project can supply both its promised result and the means to formulate a previously unattainable problem. Use C.40.NP to construct that next worthwhile question, including the knowledge, Methods and assistance it needs. It need not be another rung of a fixed ladder. Consolidation, use of the acquired result and ending one local programme can be appropriate. Open-ended development continues the construction of further attainable problems and means of addressing them; an indefinitely repeated operation or a fixed curriculum does not supply that continuation by duration alone.
Multilevel-learning research contributes a useful question: which changes are fast relative to the present decision, which are retained long enough to shape subsequent work, and how does information pass between them? Evolutionary search adds a different construction: create variants, examine their consequences, and preserve or reproduce selected variants. Use it when such variation and retention are actual parts of the Method. Those temporal and selection relations can be connected to the table above, but the connection must be constructed for the work. A richer trajectory or a larger diversity score is useful only through the development result it helps obtain.
