CB.Preface:5 - The work being performed, and the support it needs
A method in this book often describes a constituent of larger work. In the repairer application, asking for a discriminating observation is part of a peer exchange; that exchange is part of an attempt to obtain a diagnostic continuation; and the repairer’s diagnostic work serves an actual customer’s maintenance need. The customer commitment changes the peer exchange while it is happening. If the answer must be accountable and available within an hour, an optional evening group cannot carry that demand.
Another condition can change the constituent action without changing its conversational form. When the needed equipment record is confidential, the case owner first obtains permission or prepares a sufficient shareable case. A facilitator can support clarification but cannot replace the practitioner competent to interpret the observation. If that intermediate competence is absent, an orderly conversation still cannot produce the promised technical result.
The same relation applies to voluntary activity. Welcoming a newcomer may be part of running a garden session. Safe access to the shared tools, suitable supervision and the session host’s available attention constrain the welcome. If the host must simultaneously resolve an urgent access incident, a prepared small task with another capable, willing helper may keep entry feasible; otherwise the session’s promise must shrink.
Community Building provides only part of this work. The relevant practice supplies its professional method and correctness criteria. Human Capability Development (HCD) supplies development of a needed human capability and the conditions for practice and feedback. Organization Change Engineering (OCE) and Operations Management (OPS) help establish work arrangements and capacity when those contributions are missing; Management Accounting (MA) helps compare costs created by the chosen promise. Method Engineering (ME) and Research Method Practice (RMP) supply method development or research when those questions are open. The supplier returns identify where those contributions become useful.
Replacing a contribution requires examining what it did in the whole. A written answer may replace an explanation of a known procedure while leaving a new case’s diagnosis unresolved. Paying a coordinator may supply booking and material preparation while leaving expert capacity unchanged. Keep these differences visible when comparing alternatives and receiving the changed work.
