CB.Reference:4 - Two ways to carry a practice, and why the distinction matters
An arrangement based on mutual participation makes contributions available through people working or spending time with one another. It may be a case exchange, music group, shared workshop or professional network. The arrangement must obtain suitable participants, material, interaction, support and a return to use. Its benefit can include valued relationships or an enjoyable experience; it need not be justified as a course or commercial acquisition mechanism.
An arrangement for independent use makes a practice obtainable and usable in people’s separate settings. It may rely on a description, demonstration, exercise, tool and correction route. Cultural continuation then depends on actual acquisition, performance, selection and retention of the practice. A forum is optional. The independent-use application shows how a missing resource changes this route even when the learner understands the method.
These alternatives can be combined within one person’s changing participation. Someone can learn independently, ask one question, contribute an example and then return to private work. CB.3 supports that change when participation itself needs help. FPF C.36 supplies the wider distinctions among cultural transmission, performance, retention and renewal. FPF C.36.RP develops how to make a way of working obtainable, usable and renewable across carriers. CB.1 compares the proposed community contribution with serious alternatives. Its independent-learning branch assumes a sufficiently known professional practice and obtainable learning provision; it does not supply every kind of cultural construction.
For example, a capable AI may already perform a selected contribution, while a person needs an explanation, a permitted tool or a professional service rather than learning that performance themselves. Obtain the missing contribution through its actual Method and provider. Use HCD when a human capability is the intended result. Use CB when participation or a joint contribution still needs arranging. C.36.RP keeps the wider acquisition, provision and renewal question available when no such participation is needed.
The language therefore starts from the receiving situation rather than a platform, a membership target or one inherited community model. It retains the useful organising repertoire found in practitioner sources while asking what each move contributes. Communities of practice supply powerful forms for joint learning and stewardship, yet learning together does not define every community or every cultural intervention. Business community methods supply purpose, provision and early organising constructions, while participants’ own purposes and voluntary terms remain explicit.
This organization accepts some additional inquiry before choosing a format. It avoids committing people to recurring interaction when an adequate reference or individual service would suffice, and avoids publishing a resource as if it could replace the interpretation or relationship people actually need. When a new case defeats those alternatives, return to the particular contribution and its conditions, not to a universal claim that communities should grow or become more active.
