CUST.8:5 - Archetypal Grounding
The analytical-service family has a monthly “active customer” calculation. A new shared operation uses a more precise status rule and passes interface tests, but an existing customer uses the old meaning in a continuing report. Automatically replacing the operation would change their result while leaving the output columns unchanged.
The provider separates two decisions. The engineering comparison qualifies old and new calculation behavior. The customer decision identifies whether the report may change and what historical comparability it needs. The family can support an explicitly named old profile beside the new one while the customer evaluates its receiving use.
The transition is then constructed. A permitted comparison sample produces both reports with an explanation of the differing records. The customer’s responsible analyst chooses the intended meaning. A prepared delivery team changes the selected configuration; the support arrangement preserves access to the previous reporting basis for the agreed use. CUST.7 includes that coexistence work. New sales use the new profile only where it fits their result.
Change a condition: the provider has no capacity to maintain both profiles during the promised support interval. Calling the new version compatible does not solve this. The feasible alternatives are to obtain support, defer the shared replacement, offer an agreed narrower arrangement or keep the old operation for that use. If a separate offering is chosen, shared installation tooling can remain common.
For a physical test-bench family, a replacement module can fit the fixture while requiring a different calibration procedure. The customer still needs valid measurements and appropriately prepared operators. Engineering qualifies the physical behavior and transition; management provides the calibration work, operating window and support before withdrawing the old module. Software version labels play no essential role in this application.
