CUST.Reference:1 - Field and Use

Customization and Productization Management concerns the continuing development of customer-specific results and repeatable offerings together. Its object is the arrangement of customer commitments, local differences, common contributions, provision and support. A product manager, service lead, delivery lead or another responsible practitioner uses it when a decision about one of these changes the others.

The recurring difficulty is not merely excessive customization. A valuable local adaptation can expose a useful common capability; a common release can damage an existing customer’s result; a standard delivery method can depend on unprovided expert work. The useful gain is to make these consequences decidable and their continuation obtainable.

A customer result and a repeatable provider contribution are distinct. A deployment can work for its recipient while depending on exceptional effort, unavailable data or an undocumented specialist. Conversely, a reusable component can be technically sound while leaving the customer’s operating change, training or support unresolved. CUST connects these two results without requiring both to succeed in every case.

An offering is the result or contribution offered to someone, together with its conditions of provision. A family contains offerings or configurations whose common basis, permitted differences and support can be explained together. A delta is a consequential difference from the chosen supported basis; it may concern work or obligations as well as an artifact. A local residue is a contribution deliberately retained for a particular case rather than admitted to the common family. A promise, contract, component, method description, performed service and provider capability remain different things.

“Customer” includes the recipient or party whose work is served; payer, user and beneficiary may differ. Public and nonprofit provision can be valuable without a positive margin on each recipient. Its commitments still require actual resources and support.

The intended practitioner can investigate the customer’s work, recover the supported offering and obtain the relevant professional contributions. CUST supplies management Methods at several useful scales. It does not supply every engineering, accounting, safety, legal or subject-specific capability needed to carry them out.
