CUST.Reference:2 - Boundaries and the Meaning of the Name
The chosen name joins two directions of work. Customization develops a fitting result from a supported basis under actual customer conditions. Productization develops a sufficiently defined, repeatable offering or reusable contribution from variable work. The second direction can produce an assisted service, a delivery method or a restricted family; it need not produce a standalone artifact or remove every specialist.
Management identifies the question of making commitments, contributions, resources and revisions fit together. It does not name a mandatory department. The same person may perform compatible contributions, and a small team may use the full Method without six separate jobs.
| Neighboring field or label | Contribution retained | Boundary of CUST |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing | Customer results, meaningful offers, programmes, inquiry and promise–execution alignment. | CUST constructs and governs the relation between actual deltas, a repeatable family, delivery capability and continuing obligations. It does not redefine customer or market inquiry. |
| Systems Engineering | Product and platform families, supported use paths, integrated offering/provider concepts, compatibility and transition. | CUST uses these engineered results in the wider customer and resource decision. It does not replace technical realization or its qualification. |
| Operations Management | Actual operating capacity, variability, coordination and feasible service commitments. | CUST explains which local and shared work the operating arrangement must provide. It does not infer capacity from a productization label. |
| Management Accounting | Customer and product economics over time. | CUST supplies the complete provision boundary and alternatives; accounting supplies their qualified economic treatment. |
| Implementation Facilitation | Inquiry into implementation difficulties, support construction and actual transfer. | CUST adds the connected local/shared receiving decisions, including whether field experience should change a repeatable offering. |
| Semantic Integration Engineering | Meaning, correspondence and permitted receiving use across contexts. | CUST uses the qualified meanings to distinguish consequential deltas. A named context or copied schema is not the integration result. |
Several alternative names remain useful for their own scopes. Productization Management foregrounds conversion into common provision but can hide the continuing legitimate local result. Customization Management can hide the reverse movement into a changed common family. Mass Customization supplies a strong line of solution-space development, robust process design and choice navigation, including services; CUST also admits useful local-only provision, non-repeatable residue and refusal. Solution Business includes wider commercial and relational questions. Product and Service Management is broader than this field, while adding “product and service” to the selected title contributes little once offering and provision are explained. Forward-Deployed Engineering names one practice arrangement, not the whole field.
This combined name is a local synthesis, not a claim that an external professional community already uses precisely this umbrella. The practices and source lines remain real at their stated scopes. The name carries no promise that customization will necessarily become scalable.
