DTM.Preface:5 - What counts as a useful result

A first result can be a bounded relation with a discriminating next observation. More detailed modeling is useful when it changes a feasible choice.

For a connected use, ask:

  • Does the account distinguish the continuing variant, its realization and a copied description?
  • Does the transmission law refer to the receiving event actually counted?
  • Does a coupling retain the participant differences and timescales that can alter the result?
  • Are an accounting decomposition, a causal claim and a value judgement kept distinct?
  • Does the response act on the proposed target, and are the necessary distinction, means and authority available?
  • What result returns to the larger work, and which observation or changed condition would reopen it?

The pattern checklists supply their local tests. These questions concern the combination: independently acceptable pieces may use incompatible events, horizons or resource assumptions.

Common failures have different repairs. Popularity mistaken for usefulness returns to DTM.1. Contacts mistaken for adoption return to DTM.2. A mean participant hiding nonlinear effects returns to DTM.3. Any unfavorable outcome labeled capture returns to DTM.7’s alternatives. Stronger protection assumed to be better returns to DTM.8/.9.

The numerical examples demonstrate deductions under stipulated assumptions. They do not establish empirical rates, effective organizational policies or comparative learning gains. A real intervention requires evidence for the subject relations, appropriate authority and the relevant practice’s assurance.
