DTM.Preface:6 - Rationale, synthesis and alternatives
The language connects several questions that are often answered in isolation: whether a dependence helps, how a variant is acquired and reconstructed, how local activity affects transmission, why contributions differ across groups, and what protective action changes.
It retains distinct methods because their first results and return conditions differ. An exposure law cannot supply the consequences of supported work. A decomposition of selection cannot identify a diverted control relation. Distinguishing intervention targets cannot replace modeling a response’s memory. Their composition makes it possible to revise one account without discarding the others.
A supplied population model is a serious cheaper alternative when its entities, event law and parameters already fit the question. Use it. Generic mathematical modeling is sufficient for representation, analysis and testing once the consequential subject relations are supplied. DTM helps when constructing and connecting those relations is itself the repeated difficulty.
Biological and epidemiological sources contribute mechanism distinctions, not classifications of cultures or people. The source comparisons in the relevant pattern bodies identify what is adopted, adapted and limited:
| Contribution to the synthesis | Where it changes the method | Retained limit |
|---|---|---|
| Separate coupling or replication from contribution to useful work | DTM.1; competing positions on cognitive offloading are compared there | State labels and chosen scores do not establish harm. |
| Distinguish contact, uptake, reconstruction and cross-scale interaction | DTM.2/.3/.6 | Human learning, AI training and biological establishment need different subject laws. |
| Separate counted units and causal selection | DTM.5 | Contribution counts are not automatically reproduction of collectives. |
| Recover a shared control or support relation | DTM.7 | An architectural analogy does not prove capture or intent. |
| Separate protection targets and include response effects | DTM.8/.9 | Lower local consequence need not mean lower transmission or lower harm elsewhere. |
| Relate continuation to compatibility and allocation of costs | DTM.3/.4/.6 | Historical equilibrium results do not supply a current adoption mechanism. |
The synthesis does not presume independence is always preferable, novelty is harmful, collective growth overrides individual consequences, or every defense is an obstacle. These are possible biases in the question being modeled. Restoring affected parties and feasible comparisons makes them inspectable.
Reopen a method when a relied-on source changes a consequential claim, a supported mechanism no longer fits the practice, an omitted interaction reverses the choice, or an existing subject method resolves the whole question with less burden. A new publication date alone is not a reason to replace a working account.
