EXD.1:11 - SoTA-Echoing

Liao et al., 2021 connect question elicitation in concrete tasks with the purposes and explanatory solutions that can answer them. Adapt that move to the recipient’s intended inference and actual subject. A generic catalogue is a useful prompt; one discriminating task question can be sufficient.

Schmude et al., 2025 used free questions, a question bank and clarification in two algorithmic-decision scenarios with 24 participants. Their exploratory work supports allowing recipients to state why information matters and to go beyond prepared categories. It establishes neither completeness of the bank nor a general comprehension effect.

Galbraith and Khalifa, 2026, §§2 and 5 propose an interrogative account of understanding while leaving important epistemic conditions open. Use the question discrimination; subject warrant still comes from the relevant account. The procedure here is a bounded explanation-practice adaptation.

At the same practical grain, “Why is 5.5 wrong?” and “Which unit receives equal weight?” can both be brief. The latter distinguishes the live alternatives in the worked case. That conceptual advantage does not establish a measured reduction in conversation time. Reopen the adaptation when a recurring use cannot express its needed distinction through the proposed question work.
