FPF.Preface:16.5.5.1 - Recover the pressure question and its inputs

An engineer needs a pressure assessment for a decision about pump P17: does the available information establish that its pressure, in the stated configuration and operating regime, is at or below a 300 kPa absolute limit at the measurement occasion? Other conditions and authority for releasing the installation remain separate.

Assume three source contributions. A model manual states the absolute pressure limit. A configuration record establishes that this limit applies to P17 in the regime being considered. A measurement record reports 195 kPa above the local atmospheric pressure, with an error bound of 5 kPa; local atmospheric pressure is 100 kPa absolute with an error bound of 2 kPa. For this illustration the bounds are enclosing intervals under the stated conditions, not confidence intervals. The records are assumed applicable to the same regime and measurement occasion.

Use C.16 to recover the measurement subject, reference and uncertainty. Here the addition relation is available, so an interval calculation can determine what comparison the supplied bounds resolve.

Extracting two numbers called “pressure” would lose the difference between gauge and absolute reference. Retaining all three documents as a bibliography would leave the comparison unperformed. The construction needs the applicability connection, the pressure reference and the calculation consumed by the decision.
