Source return and continued use

GOALS.Source:1 - Grounds and source return

The practitioner synthesis is John Doerr, Measure What Matters (Portfolio/Penguin, 2018), especially chapters 4–14 on focus, alignment, tracking and stretch; chapters 15–21 on CFR, participation and sustained use; and Resources 1–5. Its company accounts are historical practitioner evidence. The framework uses their methods and consequential difficulties while distinguishing them from claims that OKRs caused company growth.

Source contributionWhere it changes the methodReturn to the source when
Focus and limited priorities; chapters 4–6 and Resource 1GOALS.3 and GOALS.5 retain a focused change agenda while accounting for current service and full demand.Deciding how a different organization joins strategic direction and local initiative.
Objectives and collectively adequate KRs; Resource 1, tracking and stretch casesGOALS.2 tests both useful purpose and evidence of achievement; outputs retain their actual role.A KR proposal appears successful while the recipient result can remain absent.
Committed and aspirational work; chapters 12–14 and Resource 1GOALS.1 and GOALS.5 separate modes, forecasts and downstream reliance.Adapting stretch where some contributions must be dependable.
Cross-team alignment; chapters 7–9, 17 and Resource 1GOALS.3 and GOALS.5 obtain horizontal contributions and reconcile shared capacity.Numerical cascading hides how one team uses another’s result.
Tracking, adaptation, scoring and reflection; chapter 10 and Resource 1GOALS.4 interprets evidence and distinguishes completion, changed means, revision and retirement.A local scoring or carryover convention changes what is claimed.
CFR and personnel separation; chapter 15 and Resource 3GOALS.8 connects help, recognition and qualified personnel uses.A conversation, score or learning observation is given a new consequence.
Acquisition, participation and continuing use; chapters 16–21 and Resources 2, 4 and 5GOALS.9 develops the capability and support needed for actual use.A rollout or first facilitated result is being generalized to sustained practice.
Recipient and wider consequences across the company and nonprofit casesReference:1–5 and GOALS.1–3 keep eligibility, burden, privacy, participant contribution and protected conditions in the desired result. The visible result conceals who bears the cost or whose needs were omitted.

The Library suppliers in Reference:4 provide full professional methods. FPF C.39 and C.43 supply the general construction and control account. The specific joins and worked cases in this framework are a methodological synthesis, not empirical estimates of an OKR effect. Constructed numbers illustrate the reasoning under their stated assumptions.

GOALS.Source:2 - Contemporary contributions and their limits

  • Butler, Zimmermann and Bird, Objectives and Key Results in Software Teams: Challenges, Opportunities and Impact on Development, preprint 2023 / ICSE-SEIP 2024: one-company interviews and survey expose formulation, data and neighboring-goal visibility difficulties. GOALS.5 and GOALS.9 retain these practical questions; the design and self-report limits prevent a universal causal conclusion.
  • Gollwitzer and Sheeran, Psychology of Planning, 2025: the conditional human planning contribution is used in GOALS.6:4.3. The task and person’s conditions govern its use.
  • Riddell and colleagues, Goal adjustment, online 2025 / volume 2026: synthesis distinguishes disengagement, reengagement and flexibility. Heterogeneity, study designs and publication-bias concerns limit broad effect claims. GOALS.4 and GOALS.6 retain adjustment as a choice requiring its own grounds.
  • Islam and colleagues, All pain and no gain, 2024: a school trial distinguishes reported effort from test results. GOALS.2 retains that conceptual caution while deriving workplace criteria from the actual work.
  • Wowerath, Engaging the entire organization, online 2025 / volume 2026: interviews and documents from one early pilot inform participation and integration questions. They do not establish a universal success percentage or long-term effect.
  • Altan, Guney and Uler, Goal Setting and Feedback: The Power of Joint Use, 2026: the studied interaction of employer goals and feedback concerns an experimental effort setting. Its worker costs and employer benefit require separate interpretation; it supplies no universal OKR or welfare prescription.
  • Chen and colleagues, Are We On Track?, CHI 2025: a small prototype study distinguishes passive cues and active reflection prompts. It motivates comparing interruption with useful action in GOALS.5, rather than a claim that an AI meeting monitor generally improves work.
  • Tankelevitch and Rintel, Goals as First-Class Abstractions in Human–AI Collaboration, 2026: a design position motivates explicit meaning, history and revision in GOALS.7. Current system behavior still needs its own technical basis.
  • OpenAI, Detecting misbehavior in frontier reasoning models, 10 March 2025: coding experiments expose reward exploitation under particular training and evaluation conditions. GOALS.7 separates the wanted result from the optimized reward and requires an adequate basis for completion evidence.
  • OpenAI, Foundations for trustworthy third-party evaluations, 29 May 2026: evaluation guidance relates claims to the actual model, scaffolding, environment, resources and assessment. GOALS.7 retains these configuration conditions when interpreting evidence or changing the arrangement.

These sources answer different questions. A current publication can report older data, and a current interface can differ from the one described. Use current product documentation for runtime capabilities and the relevant professional source for a stronger psychological, organizational or causal claim.

GOALS.Source:3 - Interpretation and maintenance

The framework code and document qualifier are GOALS. The nine pattern identifiers name separately selectable methods; their order is a reading arrangement. Reference identifies the whole account, while Readme supplies practical entries. The organizational OKR application projects the common methods into its specified use and adds the corresponding arrangements; the human and AI applications retain their distinct conditions.

Keep each method’s result, protected conditions and direct supplier connections when adapting the text. A change in source evidence can alter a particular recommendation without invalidating the whole repertoire. A changed supplier method, runtime, population, permission, data use or commitment reopens the applications that rely on it. Return to the exact affected contribution and retain adequate unchanged results.

Practical evidence can reveal a missing operation or relation. Develop that content where its method is owned and repair the direct uses. A learning product may supply audience-specific explanation, practice and assistance; the goal method must still make its own consequential choices and conditions recoverable. A successful application supports its demonstrated scope, while broader performance, reliability and learning claims need appropriate evidence.
