HRM.3:4.3 - Construct a coherent reward arrangement

Combine the bases into terms people can understand: base pay or bands, justified supplements, progression, variable components, benefits and relevant non-financial conditions. Explain which component answers which question. A grade can organize job values while a separately justified premium responds to a market condition. A progression rule can use demonstrated capability while an allowance pays for a specified condition. One label need not pretend to explain every amount.

Compare the complete costs and cash demands with MA and, where applicable, FIN. Include transition obligations, administration and effects on other groups. A budget limit can require changed work, a smaller undertaking, phased discretionary changes or a different obtaining choice. It does not make an amount already owed disappear. Take an infeasible arrangement back to HRM.1 rather than presenting an unfunded promise as motivation.

Examine the behaviors the combined terms make attractive. If advisers must mentor, the workload and reward need to allow that work. If a sales measure is used, examine its connection to acceptable service and continuing commitments. If benefits or flexible arrangements are offered, verify who can actually use them. Ask what would happen if participants followed the rule carefully; do not rely on unpaid goodwill to repair a defective design.
