MA.Preface:1 - The working problem

A controller is asked whether another order is worthwhile. The report supplies a cost per unit, but the order needs a setup, qualified staff and perhaps an extra machine block. The unit cost does not explain those dependencies. Elsewhere, a manager sees profit rise while cash falls, or receives a demand forecast that has been negotiated to match a spending ceiling.

Management Accounting serves these internal accounts and their uses. Its central work is to construct and interpret the relationships between work, resources, money, expectations and measured performance. The resulting account can support a decision, explanation or inquiry. The decision itself retains the criteria and authority of the responsible operating, financial or management practice.

An account’s purpose matters. A required external statement, a resource-consumption model and a timed cash account can all be correct while carrying different amounts. The aim is to supply the account the receiving use needs and preserve its relationship to the other valid views.
