MDPE.19:8 - Rationale and Source Use

UNESCO’s intangible-cultural-heritage practice distinguishes documentation from continued recreation, transmission, community participation, and revitalization. This pattern uses that distinction without treating official listing or policy authority as evidence of actual practice.

Experimental cultural-evolution work distinguishes several transmission arrangements, learning opportunities, costs, redundancy, and information-loss mechanisms. It supports varying the relation relevant to a claim rather than assuming one universal transmission-chain test.

Singh and Hill’s long Northern Aché observation shows what a bounded negative result can and cannot establish. Extended failure to observe Dance or infant-directed song can challenge a universality claim and support absence in the observed population and period. It does not reconstruct the loss event, cause, date, or responsible Agent, and it grants no authority for an outside restoration project.

Dance-interaction and reporting studies show why video or movement geometry alone can miss partner response, touch, timing, agency, feedback, teaching, and social setting. Direct Music and Dance Methods remain necessary for deciding which differences matter and for performing the test.

UNESCO, 2003 Convention, Transmission, and Safeguarding without freezingDistinguish record preservation, enactment, transmission, recreation, participation, and revitalization.Listing and policy do not establish present continuation or value in one population.
Singh and Hill, “Loss of dance and infant-directed song among the Northern Aché”, 2025Bound a negative continuation claim by population, observation, and period.Does not identify a loss event, cause, or authorized intervention.
Derex et al., “Trade-offs, control conditions, and alternative designs in the experimental study of cultural evolution”, 2024Select transmission and reproduction probes according to the claim and cost.No experimental arrangement is the default for field practice.
Barnstaple et al., “This time with feeling”, 2024; Whitehead et al., “Capturing spontaneous interactivity”, 2024Preserve bodies, interaction, setting, equipment, participant evidence, and coordination in Dance tests.Their measures do not by themselves establish continuation or select an intervention.

Refresh a source only when a newer result changes a test, intervention, evidence limit, or continuation decision. Publication status, official authority, and press attention do not substitute for actual Work in the named practice.
