MDPE.22:8 - Rationale and Source Use
Eco-evo-devo and niche-construction analogies draw attention to how artists and practitioners change their environment. They build schools, clubs, labels, festivals, camps, archives, tools, media and platforms that change later generation, teaching, recognition, selection and retention. This pattern keeps the useful engineering move while avoiding a literal biological transfer.
Historical art-world, scene and niche-construction studies remain useful for discovering candidate relations. They do not select a current project architecture. The present-practice cases below add three concerns to the inquiry: infrastructure can include self-maintenance under precarity and representation pressure; Agents operating a Music platform perform financing, event-format, and participant-activation Work; and Dance-archive Work must handle embodied knowledge, community custody, consent and representation limits as well as digitization.
| Source | Use in this pattern | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Laland, Odling-Smee, and Feldman, “Niche construction, biological evolution, and cultural change,” 2000 | Supplies deliberate modification of conditions that can feed back on later practice and selection as a hypothesis-generating analogy. | Biological niche construction is not the ontology or universal Method of Music and Dance projects. |
| Howard S. Becker, Art Worlds, 1982 | Exposes cooperative Work, conventions, resources, distribution, support, and audiences behind artistic results. | Historical sociology does not select a current project architecture or establish one causal relation. |
| Andy Bennett and Richard A. Peterson, eds., Music Scenes, 2004 | Supplies local, translocal, and virtual scene cases and cautions against treating genre labels as the whole social organization. | Scene descriptions do not establish one current scene or authorize intervention. |
| Schmidt, Bork Petersen, Schnor, and Vedel, “Dancing necessities: Infrastructures, interventions, and maintenance”, 2024 | Adds venue economy, education, self-organized spaces and cooperatives, critique, self-archiving, maintenance, structural precarity and representation to a current Dance-infrastructure inquiry. | One Danish contemporary-Dance field inquiry does not establish the same relations or priorities for social Dance, another country, or Music. |
| Riom, “Being a ‘Global Music Platform’: Platform Work in Light-Tech Capitalism”, 2024 | Shows in one multi-sited Sofar Sounds ethnography that platform Work included digital incorporation, venture financing, event-format adaptation, and recruitment and generification of participants. | One company and field period do not define all Music platforms or establish the causal contribution of any operation. |
| Bench and Elswit, “If the archive can’t consent: Reimagining motion data and AI ethics for dance’s embodied histories”, published 2026 | Adds embodied knowledge, community custodial relations, participatory design, consent, representational harm, pedagogical encounters, and limits of pose or motion data to current Dance-archive and AI Work. | An essay and bounded Dunham Technique collaboration do not supply a universal archive, consent, machine-learning, or reconstruction Method. |
| UNESCO, Transmission and Safeguarding without freezing | Keeps documentation, transmission, participation, recreation, and revitalization distinct. | Official recognition does not establish local enactment, prevalence, value, or continuation. |
| Blackwell et al., Live Coding: A User’s Manual and Algorave guidelines | Supply source-local live-coding and event-programming distinctions for the worked case. | They do not establish prevalence, receiving enactment, continuation, or one preferred sound style. |
The three present-practice cases support different parts of an environment inquiry:
| Present-practice case | Observed relations and decision result | Use in an environment inquiry | Evidence status, transfer limit, and reopen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Danish contemporary-Dance infrastructure | Venues and their economy, education, self-organized spaces and cooperatives, critique and self-archiving interact with maintenance, precarity and representation. | Inspect financing, self-maintenance, representation, provider burden and alternatives in MDPE.22:0.1, 3.2, 3.4 and 3.6. | A current field inquiry and expert account, not a prevalence estimate or causal law. Reopen if social-Dance or another field shows that these relations change no decision or that a missing relation dominates. |
| Sofar Sounds as Music-platform Work | Digital devices, financing, event format and activation of artists, hosts, volunteers and guests jointly shape what concerts and performer adaptations become repeatable. | Include interface, ticketing, financing, participant recruitment, event provision and performer adaptation in platform questions; a discovery intervention can affect those relations. | Evidence from one multi-sited ethnography. Reopen when another Music platform supplies an unlike operating result that changes the relation set or intervention choice. |
| Dunham Technique, motion data and AI archive Work | Documents, film, educator bodies, oral history, teaching encounters, community custody, consent and representational limits jointly affect what can be recovered or reused. | Include source and consent relations, embodied knowledge, community custody, representation limits and a return to current Work in archive questions; digitization alone cannot complete the result. | A current bounded collaboration and conceptual analysis. Reopen when Work using a direct archive or source-community Method returns a different smallest usable result or rejects one of these relations. |
Refresh a source when it changes the selected surrounding relation, intervention, observation, limit, or decision. A newer source, official rule, popular case, or academic visibility does not displace actual project evidence by status alone.
