Organization Change Engineering connects a proposed contribution with the relations that let an organization obtain it. A design states who should supply what to whom; assignments, access and authority determine which actions can occur; representative work shows whether the receiving result can be obtained. Observed consequences can then change a particular relation while useful parts of the arrangement continue.
These are selected examples of the language at work, not a catalogue or a prescribed transformation sequence. Enter where you have adequate inputs, and stop at the result your decision needs. The Table of Contents gives direct access to the methods; the Preface explains their boundaries and shared conditions. You can ask an assisting agent to explain a pattern or comment on your case in the language of your work, without framework jargon.
The cases are constructed illustrations. Their authority, service, learning and protection results are supplied premises, not evidence about actual organizations. In a real application, obtain the professional contribution or decision from the participant who can supply it.
OCE-PUMPWORKS - Compare weekly AI-inspection work arrangements while service continues
- Situation: PumpWorks produces an inspection package with supporting evidence quarterly and needs the same bounded package weekly. Staffing, platform and provider proposals do not yet describe complete ways of obtaining it.
- Question: Which whole arrangement can produce the weekly contribution, and what is still needed before a trial or continuing use can rely on it?
- First useful result or blocker: A comparison of complete alternatives for the same result, with a decision or probe recommendation at its supported scope and the authority, access, support or protection still needed.
- Start with: OCE.8 - Compare Human, AI, Robotic, and Provider Arrangements for the Same Organizational Work Result, using the current organization, contribution and relation accounts. Reopen those inputs only where the comparison exposes a gap.
- Stop or return: Keep the initial recommendation, a later trial authorization and an observed capability result distinct. A changed support or service condition returns to the action and decision that rely on it.
- Recover what the comparison is meant to change. In the PumpWorks application, OCE.1 - Identify the Changed Organization and Intended Contribution bounds the engineering organization and its intended contribution. OCE.2 - Recover Current Organization Work and Arrangement recovers actual evidence supply, receiving decisions, provider support and service commitments. OCE.3 - Generate and Compare Organization Concepts uses participant knowledge to generate functional repair, changed stream/enabling relations and a provider hybrid.
- Make the contributions and their conditions explicit. OCE.4 - Design an Organization’s Contribution Architecture specifies Electrical’s evidence supply, Integration’s source check and the return of unsupported claims. Safety acceptance and release remain separate decisions. OCE.6 - Establish Holder Assignments and Enabling Relations for Organization Change establishes which appointment and access conditions are effective: E27’s appointment and rig access obtain in the stated interval, while provider-repository access is decided but not effective. The separate claim of coordination responsibility lacks the rule and participant information needed to establish it. That distinction tells the practitioner which work can proceed.
- Compare whole ways for the same weekly result. OCE.8 completes internal-platform, dual-holder and hybrid-trace alternatives around their performers, support, acceptance, burden and recovery. The quarterly baseline is useful comparison evidence but does not meet the weekly target. The result is a recommendation to probe the hybrid, with missing trial authority, effective provider access and protection/recovery evidence. It is not yet a choice of the hybrid or permission to run the probe.
- Use later supplied conditions without rewriting the earlier result. The application’s separate hypothetical continuation supplies trial authorization, effective permitted access, qualified learning support and service/recovery conditions. OCE.9 - Realize a Bounded Organization-Capability Increment can then exercise the contribution through source/version checking, challenge, acceptance and an exception return. An ambiguous version cue defeats a rehearsal; its owner repairs it, and a qualified learning provider supplies practice, feedback and an uncoached assessment. The probe informs a separate bounded choice of limited hybrid use. Three later episodes, including provider-failure recovery and one without the initiating facilitator, support only the stated configuration, participants, release family and period.
- Include the whole change burden in continuing service. OCE.11 - Coordinate Organization-Change Work with Continuing Service uses the supplied forty-hour week: twenty-four hours of service, six of other commitments and four of interruption reserve leave at most six for all change work. A six-hour incident uses the reserve and two of those hours, leaving four. Learning, setup, extra review and debrief must fit together; the owners reduce starts, and the displaced probe remains unperformed. A larger incident or lost support reopens the remaining allowance.
- Repair the actual participation difficulty. OCE.10 - Choose a Response to Participation or Working Culture Difficulties in the Target Organization distinguishes ineffective access from discouragement of early challenge through blame or date-only recognition. Access repair and an authorized challenge-and-response change are different actions. OCE.12 - Distribute Leadership Contributions in Organization Change obtains the needed brief, role support, feedback and debrief from capable participants; the manager’s allocation of time does not replace a learning provider’s assessment. Later peer use can support a local participation result, while wider cultural or causal claims remain open.
If another change proposes retiring an evidence-return channel still needed for challenged packages, use OCE.16 as shown below. Migration completion alone does not end that receiving need. Apply an adequate retention or replacement result in the service arrangement without repeating its comparison.
OCE-CONSEQUENCES - Keep a useful contribution while repairing the service it disrupts
- Situation: The intended contribution improves, but another service deteriorates and the same support holder may be committed in incompatible windows.
- Question: What do the observations establish, and which relation can the responsible owner change now?
- First useful result or blocker: A comparison preserving both gain and loss, then a justified authorized revision or the particular missing relation, protection or authority result.
- Start with: OCE.13 - Observe and Compare Organization-Change Consequences for the unresolved consequence question. If an adequate result already identifies the challenged relation, enter OCE.14 - Decide Whether and How to Revise the Organization from Qualified Results directly.
- Stop or return: Preserve a descriptive contrast at its supported scope. An authorized allocation change still needs effective assignments, usable support and the relevant receiving observations.
- Compare like observations and retain unlike consequences. In the later, separately constructed PumpWorks episode, matching eligibility and counting rules apply to two eight-week windows. Late evidence returns fall from 8/40 (20%) to 3/40 (7.5%). Late service follow-ups rise from 2/20 (10%) to 6/20 (30%). Reports of extra checking after hours have no comparable earlier report set. OCE.13 retains all three results at their actual reach; staffing, incident and product mix still prevent attribution to the hybrid arrangement.
- Obtain the fact that changes the revision choice. Suppose the assignment and work account separately confirms that one support holder is committed in incompatible windows. Qualified service and employment contributions establish protected coverage and feasible substitution. That result supports a bounded repair question without first proving the overall causal effect of the organization design.
- Compare the real revision alternatives. OCE.14 compares the current assignment, a repaired support interval with qualified substitution, and suspension of the affected hybrid contribution with an available manual recovery. Under the supplied service constraint, unchanged double allocation cannot continue. The authorized owner selects support repair and accepts less time for other change work. Independent Safety acceptance and release authority remain unchanged.
- Make the decision usable and return its consequences. After the required allocation and holder-acceptance acts occur, OCE.6 supplies the changed effective relation. OCE.9 establishes the still-missing support integration; OCE.11 protects the overlap and return to service; OCE.13 supplies the next comparison when it can change continuation. If protected coverage is unavailable, the dependent repair stops. The observed contrasts and unaffected contributions remain usable.
The hospital application changes the receiving question: shorter waiting among admitted cases can coexist with more severe-case diversion and missing follow-up. Obtain the clinical and measurement result needed for the intended patient claim. A qualified protection requirement can justify an authorized pause before overall causal attribution is settled; OCE does not supply the clinical judgement or that authority.
OCE-ASSOCIATION - Preserve contribution and authority across membership and service changes
- Situation: A distributed association depends on volunteers, employers, publication services and bylaw-governed decisions. A chair’s term or another change can remove a condition needed by continuing work.
- Question: Which relations remain effective, which contribution can continue, and which direct decision must return to each affected change?
- First useful result or blocker: The position and assignment facts needed for the next action, coordinated architecture decisions or a supported cross-change dependency with its direct result still needed.
- Start with: OCE.6 for an enabling condition, OCE.5 - Define Organization Positions when position continuity or vacancy matters, or OCE.16 - Reconcile Simultaneous Organization-Change Work for a condition changed by a separate initiative.
- Stop or return: Stop the action whose authority or support has expired; keep unaffected permitted work. A referral to governance is not its decision, and OCE.16 creates no authority over the participating organizations.
- Separate a continuing position from its present holder. In the association application, OCE.5 describes the editorial-chair position already established by the effective bylaw, with its expected contribution and eligibility. If that basis is missing, the description remains a proposal or the position claim remains unresolved. Vacancy or a replacement holder need not create a different position. OCE.6 separately obtains the required election or appointment acts, volunteer acceptance, publication access and any employer permission. When no continuing position is needed, a direct assignment can suffice.
- Coordinate structures without forcing them to match. OCE.7 - Coordinate Product-or-Service and Organization Architecture Decisions compares organization-side, publication-service-side, joint changes and a bounded mismatch. Ballot rules, repositories, language communities and employer arrangements can justify different structures and timetables. Each responsible owner makes its own decision and states the contribution, accepted burden and condition that reopens it.
- Use the arrangement for a bounded receiving result. With qualified participants, lawful source use, translation and repository support supplied, OCE.9 exercises an amendment packet through submission, challenge and correction. OCE.12 can supply peer facilitation and feedback. Packet preparation is not adoption of the standard. If the chair’s term expires, OCE.11 stops the action needing that officeholder’s authority; an OCE.14 reassignment remains a proposal until the body authorized by the current rules decides it.
- Follow one consequential dependency between changes. Suppose a credential change expects authorization from an incoming chair, while the election change expects new credentials before the ballot establishing that chair. OCE.16 checks the alleged circle against the actual bylaws, authority, credential evidence and windows. Method Engineering ME.6 can compare the relevant order and support arrangements; OCE.4 and OCE.6 supply contribution and enabling-relation results; the association’s governance body supplies the bylaw-authority judgement. Return each resulting condition, or the missing result, to both changes. An expired term remains expired, and a sufficient direct answer ends this coordination question.
OCE-PRACTICE-CONTINUATION - Keep useful practice when names, examples and opportunities differ
- Situation: Practitioners use different labels for organization mapping; some recover useful relations, some fill charts, and others have no permitted case on which to act.
- Question: What is continuing, what needs repair, and what would another practitioner need to produce a usable result?
- First useful result or blocker: An account of observed use, a supported repair to its example or conditions for further use, or a specific method, capability, opportunity or access question.
- Start with: OCE.17 - Continue and Renew Organization-Change Engineering Practice and one consequential episode.
- Stop or return: Retain adequate observed practice. Changed terminology, attendance and lack of opportunity do not by themselves establish either learning or loss of the method’s useful action.
- Recover the action behind the label. In the practitioner application, eight practitioners work across three organizations. Four observed cases recover actual work, evidence supply and receiving decisions under different titles; two show charts without the needed relation; two lack a suitable permitted case. These are continued use, a gap to examine and unobserved use respectively.
- Repair the contribution that failed. Comparing a usable case with the shared example reveals that its recognition question rewards completed department boxes. Within the group’s permission, a qualified facilitator and willing practitioners critique the cases, retain useful variants and replace the deficient example with a source-linked case and counterexample. Later feedback asks which supplied contribution and receiving decision the practitioner recovered.
- Use another method only for its distinct question. If the actual OCE method already contains the needed move, repairing its example need not create a variant. OCE.15 - Choose, Develop, or Refresh Organization-Change Methods enters when the reusable method or available repertoire lacks an answer; it returns an account of available methods and remaining gaps, or an OCE candidate requiring the applicable Method Engineering qualification. Use qualified HCD or learning help when distinguishing a human difficulty from conditions of use would change the action. Use OCE.10 for participation in the target organization, which is a different question from continuation of OCE practice.
- Keep the later observation within its reach. In the fictional follow-up, one practitioner recovers the contribution and authority in another case; another cannot obtain permitted evidence access. Retain the observed use and return the access gap to its owner. This does not establish the intervention’s causal effect or lasting retention across the profession. A later changed case or lost support reopens the particular conclusion it affects.
