Source-informed design and its limits

The working question is how to construct a useful possibility before the target result and its obtaining arrangement are settled. A short menu of available technologies is efficient when an adequate result premise already exists; it fails this use when nobody has established why the proposed contribution matters. This Method retains the useful menu as search input and adds problem/promise construction, dependencies and a bounded first return.

Phillips’s 2025 practitioner account of decision analysis treats models as purpose-dependent support for exploring possible futures, using only the ingredients the situation needs. Its sections on requisite models, decision conferences and decision-analysis technology inform the non-compulsory inquiry and the separation between analytical exploration and the accountable person’s decision. This is a contemporary practitioner synthesis, not empirical validation of this cross-holder Method.

Keeney’s older generation anchor informs explicit value questions; the human career framework informs that branch’s alternatives and information qualification. C.18 governs any archive/front and possibility-space claim. These contributions are not interchangeable and do not, separately or together, prove practical reachability for an actual holder.

The substantive addition here is the complete prospective construction: from neighboring-use search through a worthwhile problem and proposed contribution to support dependencies, bounded reachability and a discriminating return. An archive-only approach preserves candidates but still needs a generator and domain facts. A same-result arrangement Method is powerful after its result premise is stable; it cannot substitute for this earlier question. Conversely, once the opportunity question is settled, this Method should stop and let the exact next owner work.

What changes in practice is concrete: “we should develop in this promising area” becomes a candidate contribution whose value, dependencies and next question can be inspected. The account can preserve a worthwhile possibility while refusing an unsupported reachability or advice claim.
