RMP.1:5.7 - One Supplied Protocol, Two Different Epistemic Tasks

Consider a stipulated two-condition assay of polymer stiffness after dry or humid storage. Its materials, allocation, conditioning, instrument, sample rationale, analysis and interpretation rules are fully supplied and justified for the uses described below. Access, competent performance, protection and resources are also supplied. The example changes the question and intended contribution while retaining the assay procedure.

Replication of a disputed claim. The current source frame contains conflicting findings about whether humidity changes stiffness in a named material and conditioning range. A new independent sample can change support for that bounded claim. The supplied protocol already specifies the comparison, uncertainty treatment and compatible, discrepant and inconclusive returns; no procedural or interpretive choice remains for this team to invent. The inquiry still has a non-routine epistemic task: examine the disputed relation and return what its new material warrants. It passes unresolvedness, knowledge criticism, inspectability and bounded communicability. Its brief identifies the claim, frame, criticism demand, intended new-data contribution and limits. If the design is already selected, use that supplied result; RMP.6 can decide whether the relevant replication contribution warrants its obtainable burden. RMP.1 membership alone does not commission it. An inconclusive return may leave the claim disputed, while a discrepancy reopens only the interpretation its conditions warrant.

Routine quality control. A production laboratory runs the same two-condition assay to classify a lot under an accepted material specification and qualified acceptance rule. Its current task does not test or develop the humidity-to-stiffness knowledge relation; it uses that relation to return the lot verdict. The unknown next measurement and possible rejection of the lot are ordinary case uncertainty. A systematic trace and a communicated certificate do not turn that task into research. Return the result to quality assurance and the release decision to the production authority. An out-of-range result first takes the qualified investigation or recovery route; it reopens RMP.1 only if an unresolved claim about the relation, measure or applicability survives and all four conditions hold.

A trainee running either assay to learn the procedure supplies a third, different result. Personal unfamiliarity does not establish a gap in the current knowledge frame. The same operations can therefore support learning, quality control or research; classify the bounded contribution being made and preserve the result needed by its actual receiver.
