Cross-Pattern Application

APP-RMP-01 — Pump-P4 accelerated seal evidence

This constructed application connects RMP.1–RMP.8. It is not evidence about an actual pump, seal, failure mechanism, test Method, instrument or authority.

Pump-P4’s reliability council asks whether a high-temperature accelerated seal test supports changing the maintenance interval. The maintenance authority retains that choice. Domain engineering and assurance own the qualified failure relation, test Method and criteria; instrument, laboratory, safety, access, and material owners supply their own results.

First fork — routine qualification, supplied answer, or research question

RMP.1 recovers the receiving use and current frame before treating the laboratory request as research.

Supplied situationRMP.1 result
A qualified field failure mechanism, applicable acceleration relation, qualified test Method and instrument, criteria, and evidence-use rule are current.Return routine qualification/validation to engineering or assurance and the interval choice to the maintenance authority.
Current qualified evidence already shows that the proposed accelerated condition changes the dominant degradation mechanism for this use.Return that exact supplied result and stop. Do not commission a confirming study merely for appearance.
The current frame leaves acceleration-induced mechanism change, installation damage, material variation, or field fluid exposure as serious rivals, and a non-routine criticism-bearing comparison is needed.Return a ResearchQuestionBrief asking whether the accelerated condition preserves the field mechanism-to-evidence relation within the named envelope.
A load-bearing current frame, source result, or domain relation is unavailable.Return a research-boundary hold naming the missing result, the blocked decision, the responsible supplier, and the retry condition.

The brief states the receiving use, the proposed change to the mechanism-to-evidence claim, the materials and operating conditions covered, current sources and rivals, required criticism, constraints and results supplied by other practitioners. It distinguishes the answer condition from conditions for finishing work with uncertainty. The maintenance authority retains the interval decision.

Second fork — answer the current research-allocation question

With the brief fixed, RMP.2 uses an adequate current answer or compares the real research relations with no new study. An experimental mechanism comparison, field observation or model challenge is serious only when its criticism and obtaining conditions bear on this question.

Changed supplied valueRMP.2 disposition
Applicable evidence meets the answer condition by supporting, narrowing or rejecting the proposed acceleration relation within the brief’s scope.EvidenceSufficientStop, including residual uncertainty and reopen condition.
Domain engineering supplies the indicator relation, measurement feasibility, material identity, safe operating envelope, and authority; experimental comparison best exposes acceleration-induced mechanism change.ResearchDesignDecision selecting that family and criticism. Only record locator/serialization items proven invariant across their admitted values remain as PostSelectionNeed.
The indicator may or may not discriminate the rival mechanisms, and the two plausible measurement-owner results select different strategies.ResearchDesignHold naming the indicator-feasibility result, owner, affected alternatives, forked consequences, prohibited next Work, and reopen condition; acquisition remains separate.
The evidence remains insufficient and supplied material/access or burden conditions leave no worthwhile obtainable new study for this bounded case.QualifiedNoNewStudy, preserving the unresolved relation or bounded answer, the allocation reason and any meaningful reopen condition.

If a missing value prevents a particular selection still needed, a hold is the useful return. A settled no-new-study allocation instead retains the unknown as a limitation without inventing an awaited investigation. On the selected-design branch, the decision remains the source of the comparison and its limits; RMP.3 supplies the operational work it does not itself perform.

From the selected design to operational choices and actual trace

Suppose the mechanism marker, measurement qualification, specimen plan, safe conditions and access are supplied. RMP.3 connects the marker and comparison to the question of whether acceleration changes the mechanism. The protocol identifies each seal and material batch, its assigned condition, measurement timing and procedure, and the records needed to criticize selection and missingness. Three readings from one seal remain repeated observations, not three independent seals.

Now suppose the domain owner reports that the marker cannot distinguish thermal degradation from the competing field mechanism under the selected conditions. Return that result and its consequences to RMP.2. Replacing the marker with a convenient wear score is not harmless protocol completion; the new observation needs a justified relation to the original question.

On the valid-marker branch, specimen P4-07 is damaged in handling before a planned observation. RMP.4 retains its identity and allocation, the supported handling history, absent observation, prior exclusion intention and actual decision. It connects the remaining comparison data to their specimen and measurement records. A later critic can examine the selection and missingness; the trace does not decide whether the remaining data support the scientific inference.

The operational result is an executable specification for its supported scope and a trace whose examinations and limits are clear. RMP.5 uses the actual specimen, measurement and exclusion history to analyze the bounded claim under its qualified Method. A missing observation does not by itself establish the direction or importance of any resulting bias; preserve the analysis and criticism that bear on that consequence.

From analysis to a relevant credibility examination

Suppose the proposed field conclusion rests instead on a calibrated simulation whose identified data and code reproduce the reported curve. RMP.5 retains the computational result and exposes the unsupported mechanism-to-field step. Repeating the same computation cannot establish the field claim.

RMP.6 can finish with that limited result when no relevant worthwhile examination is obtainable. If independent qualified field material later makes a discriminating mechanism comparison feasible, assess its contribution and select the appropriate validation or comparison. The selection supplies no performed result. A later returned comparison may retain, narrow or defeat the proposed field use; the maintenance authority retains the interval decision.

From a corpus answer to the exact model return

Suppose four supplied reports include two accounts of one accelerated study, an independent compatible test and a service-use account with different conditions. RMP.7 retains the supplementary report’s useful detail while recovering only two independent test contributions. It can combine the compatible laboratory contrast under its justified statistical model; the service account remains evidence for its different question. RMP.7’s numerical case shows the calculation and its assumptions.

RMP.8 compares the synthesis with the model’s particular claims. The laboratory relation can remain supported while the claimed transfer to service remains unestablished and a dependent replacement-time prediction loses its warrant. The returned correction identifies that missing relation and preserves the engineering owner’s supplied criterion. RMP.8’s model case shows those distinct changes.

The reliability council receives that bounded result. A current source answer, limited synthesis or exact correction can finish the research question; a future field study earns a separate selection, and the maintenance authority retains its decision.

APP-RMP-02 — ResidentStream-S17 salinity anomaly

This constructed application applies the same relations without academic affiliation.

Residents observe increased salinity in urban stream reach S17. A public environmental or operational receiver needs a bounded account, while site owners, safety authorities, laboratory/measurement owners, privacy or data stewards, and the regulator retain their results and authority.

RMP.1 first distinguishes:

  • established sampling against a supplied threshold and response rule, which returns a current-state observation to monitoring;
  • a current validated source/monitoring result already sufficient for the named anomaly, which returns and stops;
  • an unresolved explanation involving road-salt transport, groundwater, an outfall change, seasonality, or sensor drift that passes all four conditions and becomes a ResearchQuestionBrief; and
  • a missing measure, source, site, or authority result that produces an exact hold rather than an invented question.

For a passing brief, RMP.2 uses sufficient evidence or compares the real research alternatives with a qualified no-new-study answer. A field/observational spatial-temporal contrast, qualified source synthesis or genuinely necessary mixed relation is a candidate when it can contribute to this question. The family table in RMP.2 keeps monitoring, field comparison, source synthesis, and instrument repair distinct.

Changed supplied valueRMP.2 disposition
Current validated monitoring and source results already discriminate the bounded anomaly.EvidenceSufficientStop.
Measure validity, safe/legal site access, comparison reaches/periods, and receiving authority are supplied; the spatial-temporal relation can expose the live rivals.Field/observational ResearchDesignDecision with only invariant trace-locator details left.
Sensor validity, safe access, outfall records, or seasonal comparison availability can still eliminate or replace the field relation in a selection still needed.ResearchDesignHold identifying the exact measurement, site, record or authority result.
The bounded evidence remains insufficient and the informative comparison is no longer obtainable, with no worthwhile current substitute.QualifiedNoNewStudy preserves the observed account and unresolved explanation without commissioning a replacement study.

Citizen status changes none of these branches. A selected design does not authorize site entry or sampling, and the eventual evidence cannot order remediation.

Preserve the comparison when the field situation changes

With the field design selected, RMP.3 specifies identifiable site-period observations: the reach and sample location, the hydrological condition and timing, the qualified measurement result, and the access, weather and calibration records that let the relation be examined. A laboratory can supply the measurement result without residents recreating its professional Method.

Suppose the reference reach becomes inaccessible during the informative thaw event while downstream observations remain possible. The original paired comparison has lost a required observation. Preserve the downstream records and return the missed site-period and reason to RMP.2. A later dry-weather reference sample requires a new comparability premise; it is not routine imputation of the missing thaw event.

RMP.4 relates raw indications, qualified measurements and chart values through sample identities, calibration, context and actual transformations. Its account distinguishes a missed observation from an excluded value. A receiving reader can inspect the downstream measurement and handling history but cannot perform the original paired-event comparison. A narrower use requires its own justified question/design.

If volunteers started before recording a protocol, a dated reconstruction can describe what surviving records support. It does not establish prospective specification. Protected access details remain under their actual conditions; a public summary names the examinations it supports and the limitations that remain.

RMP.5 can return the supported downstream pattern while leaving attribution to the proposed source unresolved. Repeated downstream readings do not supply the lost reference reach. RMP.6 assesses whether an authorized matched observation in a later period is worth obtaining for that new question. Its future result cannot recreate the missed thaw comparison, and the current limited answer can finish without promising it. The environmental receiver retains the response decision.

Relate unlike contributions and return the limitation

If residents also receive other catchment studies and interpretations, RMP.7 asks which question each can answer. A missed local paired-event comparison does not reappear because another catchment has a similar chart. A qualified cross-catchment comparison may support a stated transfer or narrower common pattern, while participation accounts answer a different question. Preserve those contexts, dependence and missing premises.

If a briefing attributes the local anomaly to one source beyond the supplied evidence, RMP.8 retains the supported downstream pattern and removes that unsupported causal assertion. It returns the particular uncertainty to the environmental receiver. A synthesis of participation experiences can separately inform the group’s account of distrust; it cannot supply a population frequency or estimate remediation effects. The group’s data authority and the regulator’s response decision remain at their own owners.

APP-RMP-03 — Factory-closure historical transfer probe

A public narrative attributes a factory closure to one executive directive. An independent historian recovers a bounded question, available archives and testimony, source provenance and silences, rival chronology, access and harm constraints, and a useful stop.

RMP.1 can return an authenticated source answer, a historical ResearchQuestionBrief, or a source/access hold. RMP.2 uses sufficient evidence or compares useful historical/source-critical and corpus-synthesis alternatives with no new study. A selected historical design needs the discriminating sources and provenance on which its comparison depends. A missing access or provenance result holds only a chronology-design selection still needed; when no worthwhile obtainable study is selected, the current allocation finishes with its evidence limit. An experimental hierarchy is not imported.

On the selected historical branch, RMP.3 specifies which document series and testimony can distinguish the executive directive from the rival earlier chronology, including provenance, dating, access and transcription needs. RMP.4 preserves inspected sources separately from catalogue descriptions, contrary material, transformations and the reasons particular sources entered the account. If the earlier archive series is inaccessible, its silence cannot count as evidence that no earlier decision existed. Return the defeated chronology comparison while preserving the usable material.

A different question—how former workers experienced the closure—may use a supplied reflexive qualitative approach. Refining a prompt after an encounter can preserve that question when the change and its reasons are retained. Replacing it with a population-wide prevalence estimate requires new question/design work. The trace preserves the researcher’s contribution and permitted grounding excerpts rather than imposing coder agreement as a universal test. RMP.5 supplies the method-appropriate examination of the historical or qualitative claim using those qualified inputs. If an authenticated earlier record becomes available, it can defeat the chronology in which the attributed change first occurred after the directive without proving what caused the earlier change. For the qualitative use, preserve a situated interpretation and discordant material; a new prevalence or causal claim requires its own support. RMP.6 can choose a useful corroboration or transfer examination without imposing a universal repeatability test.

In a further supplied corpus, several later accounts say a public protest prompted the decision to close. RMP.7 finds that they share a retrospective memoir; an authenticated record dates that decision before the protest. The supported chronology defeats that decision-causation claim, while the cause of the decision and any effect on later implementation remain unresolved. RMP.8 carries the same identified correction to a museum description that actually relied on it, through the responsible editor and applicable source-access terms. This added corpus question does not change the earlier directive comparison into the same event or explanation.

APP-RMP-04 — Retain the Method and correct its research consequence

A team has completed an analysis under a suitable Method, then finds an implementation error in its variance calculation. This constructed case begins with actual analysis and its recorded computation; it does not reopen question qualification or design merely to follow pattern order.

Use the completed RMP.9 calculation case. For 2, 4, 6 and 8, the specified sample variance is 20/3, while the software’s denominator gives 5. The Method and receiving conditions remain appropriate by the case premise.

RMP.4 locates the affected computation and dependent material. RMP.9 retains the Method, identifies the implementation correction and calls for its bounded verification. RMP.5 recalculates the affected analysis. If the uncertainty changes an existing claim or its use, RMP.8 returns that precise consequence with the limitation the recipient needs. The correction can finish in the existing analysis record; unaffected studies and their results remain at their supported reach.

A later change to dependent observations or the intended site-level quantity can raise a new Method-fit question. RMP.9 then compares the actual alternatives and whether useful evidence is attainable and worth obtaining. The changed-situation case selects such a comparison under its stated premises; it does not supply a winning Method before the evidence exists. The receiving uncertainty claim remains restricted until its missing qualification is resolved.
