SOM.Preface:3 - A connected worked use

Consider an experienced writer who produces a continuous line in two familiar forearm positions but breaks it while moving between them. The pen and paper have been checked. Checking fingers, wrist and forearm in sequence stops the stroke.

SOM.1 locates the failed interval and relates three observations: change of forearm support, the performer’s felt adjustment and the broken line. The writer distributes observations across comparable attempts, obtaining an observer’s help if necessary. This does not yet identify a grip defect.

Suppose a small familiar adjustment seems relevant but cannot be distinguished at the support change. SOM.2 makes a suitable contrast available there. If the writer can notice it but cannot regulate its development, SOM.3 prepares that change in discernible increments, retaining pen contact and guidance.

SOM.5 keeps the support transition inside a shorter stroke. The writer begins from an available portion, extends towards the difficulty and learns a workable adjustment over a little more of the transition. SOM.4 supports recalling the combined development and joining overlapping portions in motion. A cue that precedes the loss can be connected to the response once that response is available.

The return is the longer stroke with the required speed and other conditions restored. A familiar sensation with another break fails that use. A successful shorter portion remains useful preparation; an absent cue or unknown adjustment becomes a specific request for observation or instruction.

If an earlier comparison had shown that changing paper restored the line without relearning the hold, the route would have ended differently. The writer could use that condition if the work permits it. When the original paper is mandatory, the writer still needs a way to produce the line on that surface.

This is a constructed example of the methods and their branches. It reports no measured learning gain.
