SOM.Preface:4 - The simultaneous vertical of movement

A correction participates in work that is already being carried out at other levels. In a salsa turn, the dancer is performing a culturally recognizable figure with a partner while maintaining rhythmic steps, balance and the bodily changes that support them. These are simultaneous contributions, not a list of exercises to complete in order.

Work occurring during the turnWhat must be available togetherWhat a local correction must preserve
Performing the figure with a partnerThe figure’s technique, interaction and continuationThe partner can continue the shared figure.
Performing its rhythmic stepsRelations among steps, beat and the phraseA bodily adjustment does not displace the required steps or timing.
Turning while changing supportBalance, direction and transition between contactsThe movement continues through the support change.
Regulating the participating bodily actionDistinguishable, controllable and coordinated changes under those conditionsThe upper contributions remain possible while the change is made.

The example selects useful relations in this activity; it is not a fixed hierarchy of tissues or four universal movement levels. The same bodily skill can participate in other activities.

Adequate strength and figure recall do not guarantee the intermediate coordination. Conversely, refining a sensation will not supply missing strength, a dance technique or knowledge of the musical relation. The teacher locates the contribution that limits the whole and selects a preparation that retains its important connection. A reduced task can temporarily remove partner or timing demands, but the later combination still has to be learned and tested.

Performer, teacher and partner have different access and responsibilities. The performer reports experience and attempts regulation; the teacher supplies suitable technique, observation and learning support; the partner participates in the shared movement. An assisting agent works from their reports and observations to help compare descriptions and plan questions.

Human learning can occur during the same attempt that performs the figure. The movement result and capability gain remain different claims. The framework describes part of the needed vertical: using every SOM pattern does not establish that all the other methods, resources and capabilities are available.
