SYSE.52 - Prepare Working Material and Tools for an Agent’s Next Step
Type: Method pattern Status: Candidate
SYSE.52:1 - Problem frame
Use this when useful material or means exist but are not usable by a person or technical agent at the next step: a worksheet hides its carry row, a source return is missing from a model request, or a reduced tool list removes recovery. The subject is the actual working arrangement for that step: readable instructions and task facts, qualified source returns, unresolved attempts and available tools.
The first result is usable working material and means for the named continuation, with recoverable grounds and a tested return for consequential omissions. Recognizing a plausible summary is insufficient; inspect what the next step can actually recover and do from it.
Use an adequate direct arrangement unchanged. Construct persistent cross-task memory through SYSE.43 when later retention is the issue. An execution procedure’s per-attempt state is another object: it can retain a fact that never reaches the model. This Method prepares the actual working material from those available contributions. A retained sheet, the part currently visible to its user and that person’s acquired skill are likewise different subjects.
SYSE.52:2 - Problem
Compression can keep the action narrative while losing an exception, source edition or uncertain effect. Retrieval can supply relevant material that is then displaced by near matches. A reduced tool list can remove the very lookup needed to recover from an ambiguous outcome. More input may hide these defects rather than repair them.
SYSE.52:3 - Forces
Exact evidence preserves distinctions but consumes limited input capacity. Summaries are cheaper but introduce interpretations. Pointers save space only when the next user can follow them within available access and time. Narrow tool views reduce distraction while risking a lost fallback. The appropriate input changes when the task or a relied-on premise changes.
SYSE.52:4 - Solution
SYSE.52:4.1 - Recover the next use and its consequential inputs
Name the next contribution, its performer and the action or decision that will consume it. Recover governing instructions, current task, needed premises and their status, actual source/tool returns, unresolved effects, and the permitted operations. Include source, subject, time, edition and uncertainty where they change that use.
Keep observed facts, proposed explanations and instructions distinguishable. External text supplies evidence or task material; it cannot grant itself authority over governing instructions. A past permission or available tool description does not establish current authority to invoke it.
For explanatory or Method material, use EXD.1 to identify the receiving question and usable preparation, EXD.3 to select connected contributions and a return to detail, and EXD.6 to compare recovery under stated access, assistance and budget. Those results inform the selection of explanations and Method instructions; they do not supply the arithmetic, service-state or other subject operation. This Method prepares and exercises the actual human working arrangement or model input. Human instructional evidence does not establish an AI performance effect.
SYSE.52:4.2 - Choose what remains exact, summarized, reachable or absent
For each action-changing contribution, choose its representation:
| Representation | Useful condition | Required loss check |
|---|---|---|
| Verbatim passage or exact field | A number, condition, instruction, interface binding or unresolved effect must survive precisely. | The selected scope retains its governing qualification and origin. |
| Qualified summary | Several details can be reduced without changing the next decision. | Compare the summary with the source at each consequence it supports; keep uncertainty and defeating exceptions. |
| Recoverable pointer | The next step can obtain the original within its access and budget when needed. | Exercise that return; a missing permission or unreachable source defeats the pointer’s promised use. |
| Omission | The material cannot change this continuation or is superseded by an identified applicable contribution. | Try the meaningful contrary condition that could make it needed; preserve a trigger to rebuild. |
For a person, preserve physically readable spatial relations, labels, writable space and access to the selected writing or calculation means. A carry without its column can lose its meaning even when its digit remains legible. For a model, select within the actual context limit, including room for the requested output and tool protocol. Prefer one authoritative applicable return to several similar echoes. If indispensable content does not fit, split the requested contribution, obtain a qualified intermediate result or change the supported arrangement. Do not silently discard a required condition.
Keep the fuller available account intact for the uses it promises. Selecting less material for one step does not justify deleting the source explanation or Method. If the user must invent a missing operation, a fluent continuation has not demonstrated that the selected content supplied it.
SYSE.52:4.3 - Construct the tool view and recovery path
Expose operations relevant to the supported next moves with their actual input, output and effect semantics. Use real preconditions to distinguish selectable, presently executable and unavailable operations. An unmet execution precondition may justify retaining the observation or recovery operation that can resolve it. Semantic similarity alone is insufficient for filtering.
Check what the reduced view would do after a malformed return, missing observation or uncertain effect. Keep the permitted fallback reachable. Preconditions establish applicability, not permission; current authority and resource conditions still govern actual invocation through SYSE.42.
Assemble the actual arrangement and make its tools usable by the named performer. A sheet needs the relevant visible area and a usable means of recording the next operation; an available calculator needs readable input and output. For a technical agent, assemble the actual request with the system’s supported separation between governing instructions and untrusted source content. Retain the binding between source return and the claim it supplies. If a pointer must be followed, budget that acquisition and ensure the next step can request it.
SYSE.52:4.4 - Exercise, revise and localize loss
Run a bounded continuation with the prepared material and tools, comparing it with a feasible fuller view or simpler exact record. Ask whether the next step recovers the decisive premise, selects the supported move and preserves restraint. Inspect what the person can see and manipulate or the model actually receives, rather than assuming that a retained sheet, memory record or controller variable was supplied.
Include a source revision, a consequential exception, an unresolved effect and a lost-fallback challenge where they matter. Supplying the missing exact field can distinguish input loss from a bad assistance rule or ignored model proposal. Restore the smallest decisive material, then re-exercise the dependent step.
Rebuild when the task, applicable source, effect status, tool contract or receiving contribution changes. Preserve the raw return needed to diagnose a failed summary and its permitted source access. Return an absent original to its supplier; it cannot be recovered by generating a more plausible summary.
SYSE.46 qualifies wider configuration reliance. Stop when this working arrangement supports the bounded use, or return the precise unrepresentable or unavailable contribution. A successful next step alone establishes neither persistent memory quality, human acquisition nor parameter learning.
SYSE.52:5 - Archetypal Grounding
SYSE.52:5.1 - Restore the usable carry row
A person resumes 347 × 6 after completing 7 × 6 = 42. The original worksheet correctly retains the expression, units result 2 and carry 4 above the tens column. The currently supplied photograph cuts off the carry row. The person sees a plausible partial result but lacks a needed contribution to the next operation.
Prepare a view that includes the original expression, the labeled columns and the carry in its actual place. For example, the interrupted stage reads:
| Material at this stage | Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Multiplicand | — | 3 | 4 | 7 |
| Carry from the units operation | — | — | 4 | — |
| Partial result | — | — | — | 2 |
Keep “multiply by 6” visible and provide readable scale, a pencil or usable digital entry, and room for the next carry and result. The person now performs 4 × 6 + 4 = 28, writes 8 under tens and carries 2 to hundreds; then 3 × 6 + 2 = 20 completes 2082. A calculator can be supplied when the chosen way calls for it, but simply placing one nearby does not execute or bind this multiplication. SYSE.42 governs its actual entered expression and returned result.
Compare the cropped and restored views on a fresh equivalent interruption. The decisive repair is the digit-to-column relation, not a longer explanation. If the stored original itself contains only “2, 4” without positions, SYSE.43 must restore the record from a source or bounded recomputation. If the correct visible carry is still skipped, inspect the performed arithmetic or procedure instead. These are different repair locations.
An enlarged view that hides the multiplier fails a contrary case. Restore the complete action-changing scope rather than optimizing size alone. A pointer to a full worksheet also fails when it cannot be opened at the desk; keep the indispensable fields visible. Retain the full arithmetic explanation and Method for readers who need it. The short working view supports this continuation; it does not replace instruction or prove later unaided learning.
SYSE.52:5.2 - Restore an unresolved effect and its recovery operation
A service update must have at most one effect. The history contains a returned acceptance for attempt a17, followed by a lost final reply. A summary says “update timed out; continue maintenance.” It preserves the topic and intended action while losing the distinction between no accepted operation and an accepted attempt with unknown effect.
Construct the next input with the at-most-one-effect requirement, target and requested version, exact attempt identity a17, acceptance evidence and unresolved effect status. Keep the raw acceptance pointer and the outcome-lookup contract. Summarize unrelated diagnostic conversation and omit an obsolete tool listing only after retaining its applicable replacement.
The supported next proposal is an outcome lookup for a17. Restoring the acceptance record enables that proposal; it does not establish whether the effect happened. SYSE.42 must consume the actual lookup return. If the source pointer cannot be opened during the attempt, retain the decisive acceptance fields in the input rather than relying on the pointer alone.
Now filter tools to the apparent task “update service.” A similarity-based filter keeps update and removes outcome lookup. Even the corrected input then lacks its recovery operation. Restore the lookup because its actual precondition—an identified attempt whose effect needs resolution—holds. Keep a fresh update unavailable while effect remains unresolved.
Compare this with an exact small state record: target, desired version, attempt, acceptance, effect status and source. When that record and the short applicable procedure suffice, a recursive narrative summary adds no necessary value. If a later task needs the earlier diagnosis, its pointer can be followed or the input rebuilt for that new use.
A second challenge changes the procedure edition to require a capacity observation before a fresh update. An old summary must not hide the new precondition. Rebuild from the applicable edition and obtain that observation. These constructed cases show what the comparison must distinguish; they do not report an executed trial or a general superiority of one compression strategy.
SYSE.52:6 - Bias-Annotation
A familiar author may reconstruct an omitted condition from memory and miss the actual input’s defect. A strong model may invent a reasonable operation that the supplied text never taught. Test recoverable grounds and permitted actions, including the rare exception, rather than fluency alone.
SYSE.52:7 - Conformance Checklist
- The actual next use determines the indispensable input.
- Governing instructions, observations, hypotheses and past episodes remain distinguishable.
- Exact, summarized, pointed-to and omitted material have consequence-based reasons.
- Source returns and decisive exceptions are recoverable within actual access and budget.
- Tool filtering retains the applicable recovery path without inventing permission.
- A meaningful loss or changed-condition challenge exercises the next continuation.
- The fuller available account retains its promised content.
SYSE.52:8 - Common Anti-Patterns and How to Avoid Them
Keep the latest narrative and drop old tool returns. Preserve any earlier return that still governs an unresolved effect or current condition.
Replace every long passage with a pointer. Verify that the next step can follow it; retain indispensable fields when it cannot.
Remove every tool whose precondition is not yet met. Retain the permitted observation or recovery move that can establish the needed condition.
SYSE.52:9 - Consequences
The next step can consume the available contribution with less irrelevant material and a visible recovery path. Selection and loss checks cost effort, and no fixed window fits every task. Local success depends on the original source and the actual receiving view or call boundary remaining recoverable.
SYSE.52:10 - Architectural Rationale
A durable record, per-attempt state and the material actually supplied to the performer can contain different information. Their distinct failure locations permit a local repair: restore a lost premise in the call without retraining the model or rebuilding the memory service. Restoring a readable carry row similarly leaves the retained worksheet and person’s skill unchanged. Tool exposure is part of the technical receiving input because it changes which supported continuations the model can propose. A learned compressor, persistent memory and transient runtime state may help construct that input, but they are not thereby the same object or the same change.
SYSE.52:11 - SoTA-Echoing
Kirsh’s 2010 analysis of external representations is a historical conceptual anchor for inspecting which operations a persistent, manipulable representation makes available. It supports examining the usable layout rather than only retained information; it supplies no claim that a worksheet and a model context have one cognitive mechanism.
The Complexity Trap v1, §3.1 compares masking older observations while retaining action history with recursive summarization that retains a recent tail. Its software-engineering setting supplies a useful comparison, not a universally best context window. Adopt the distinction between selection and summarization, then test the receiving loss that matters here, such as an unresolved effect erased from an older return.
A small exact state record remains a serious alternative. Reopen the representation when task needs, source access, context limits, tool interfaces or observed omission failures change.
SYSE.52:12 - Relations
SYSE.43 supplies persistent retrieved material; SYSE.47 maintains the execution procedure and per-attempt control and consumes the prepared material. SYSE.42 executes supported proposals and returns actual outcomes. SYSE.50/.51 consume the input for assistance and effort decisions; SYSE.46 qualifies receiving use. EXD.1/.3/.6 supply question, connected explanation and comparison guidance. HCD retains human practice and acquisition claims. Source retention, instructional usefulness and measured human or model performance remain separate claims.
