Practical entries
The following selected examples show how an engineering answer depends on results from several methods. Enter with what the project already knows; obtain the missing contribution and return it to the decision that needs it. A changed use, configuration or observation can reopen an earlier choice. These examples are not a complete catalogue or a boundary of the framework’s coverage, and they do not prescribe a project lifecycle. For questions outside these examples, use the Table of Contents and the PatternID and title for direct help with one method.
SYSE-CARD-01 — Release a mixed physical-and-software change without losing service, configuration, or evidence
- Situation: A pump-station change combines equipment, control software and operating limits while the district-heating service must continue.
- Question: What connects local design and test results to a defensible decision about using the changed station?
- First useful result or blocker: A recommendation for a named configuration and operating use, carrying what the available results support and what still prevents release.
- Start with: SYSE.1 for the project system and SYSE.2 for its intended use, or the first missing result if these are already understood.
- Stop or return: Return the recommendation to the release authority when it can decide. Reopen only the conclusions affected by a changed configuration, use, source or observation.
In APP-SYSE-01, the station’s configuration PS17-C42 combines a pump-train modification and software changes. SYSE.16 identifies the surrounding heating arrangement; SYSE.17 finds the systems that may bear consequences, including connected users and maintainers. Their results let SYSE.2 describe the proposed operating use and the station arrangement that could support it.
SYSE.5 uses that account to develop different functional allocations and physical or software bearers. SYSE.6 compares these alternatives and selects the structures on which realization will depend. If no complete way of obtaining an included result is available, SYSE.24 compares arrangements such as adapting existing equipment or obtaining a supplied contribution, including integration and continued support. SYSE.3 then develops the required realization work and its means. An unsupported branch can return the project to the architecture choice.
SYSE.11 integrates the realized contributions and observes the increment in its named use. SYSE.13 identifies the resulting configuration and where it applies. These results give SYSE.4 a subject for interpreting the component, station and downstream observations. Component evidence supports only the claim and conditions for which it was qualified; it does not settle the station-use question. SYSE.14 consumes the configuration and qualified evidence to prepare the release decision, retaining the deciding authority and any separate permission.
The example’s recommendation remains conditional on a restored-function check and unresolved safety permission. A new component version reopens the claims affected by that version; it need not invalidate unrelated evidence. If the trial also used a new AI-assisted analysis method, SYSE.15 addresses its further use for the supported claim classes. SYSE.21 becomes relevant only when the question concerns transmission and retention across practitioners. A local trial and a claim about later cultural continuation need different results.
The same connections apply to other engineered systems. APP-SYSE-03 gives a software-only case with displayed alternatives and four limits: its one surviving architecture supports a specified canary, not unrestricted release. The specialist security result remains a premise supplied by that practice.
SYSE-CARD-02 — Develop a problem portfolio and System family without freezing either
- Situation: A prototype or operating observation changes which problem is worth solving, while an attractive system option may be difficult to realize with the available means.
- Question: Should the next change concern the problem, the system option, its builder arrangement, or a combination?
- First useful result or blocker: Comparable options and a choice, a worthwhile probe, rejection of the set, or the missing question or authority.
- Start with: SYSE.22 when project focus and use are understood. Resolve an ambiguous system through SYSE.1 and incomparable configurations through SYSE.13.
- Stop or return: Stop at a useful option decision if realization does not change it. Use SYSE.23 when the relation between the option and its builder changes the next investment or reconfiguration choice.
APP-SYSE-02 considers inspection systems whose relevant problems include early damage, false alarms, inaccessible locations and interruption of operation. SYSE.22 keeps the problem formulations connected to, but distinct from, the system-family options. SYSE.2 supplies their intended uses; SYSE.5 and SYSE.6 supply materially different arrangements; SYSE.7 and SYSE.13 keep descriptions and configurations comparable. SYSE.10 interprets what a prototype or trial actually supports.
These contributions allow SYSE.22 to choose among surviving options, reject them, or select a feasible probe whose result could change the choice enough to justify its cost. For example, a trial revealing inaccessible locations can change the use question and the relevant sensing options. Repeating the old ranking with unchanged acceptance conditions would miss that change. The new question returns to the linked use and system concepts before their architectures are compared again.
A surviving option can instead be blocked by the arrangement that builds or supports it. SYSE.3 makes that dependency explicit; SYSE.12 identifies the platform contribution. SYSE.23 then compares changing the option, changing the builder arrangement, changing both, and retaining the present arrangement. The next result is an investment or reconfiguration choice. SYSE.20 distinguishes work that can overlap from contributions that must be available first. Developing a problem, a system and its builder therefore need not become three consecutive project stages.
A source change returns through SYSE.19 to the decisions that relied on it.
SYSE-PLATFORM-PATH — Make an engineering task easier without losing its usable result
- Situation: Practitioners repeatedly reconstruct inputs, reconcile results or wait for help even though individual tools and providers work.
- Question: Which supported way of working would remove that burden while preserving the result its user needs?
- First useful result or blocker: A supported interaction for a named task, including its failure return and the professional results still needed to compare or qualify the production arrangements.
- Start with: SYSE.25 for the practitioner’s difficulty; SYSE.24 when the whole obtaining arrangement is undecided.
- Stop or return: Use the improvement when its receiving task is supported. Pass the observed failure, uncertainty or missing professional result to the practitioner who can address it. Continue independently supported interface or planning work.
In APP-SYSE-06, planners cannot reliably connect returned coated parts with their drawing, lot, fixture and program. SYSE.25 selects the practitioner improvement; SYSE.24 compares internal production, external finished-part supply and a mixed arrangement. The comparison includes waiting, transport, rejected lots, support and exit as well as price.
The example explores the mixed arrangement; choosing it for production still requires the missing professional results and comparison with the other arrangements. SYSE.26 constructs a request, clarified input, authorized operation and returned result that the practitioner can follow. SYSE.13 carries the configuration relations through it. The example request names fixture B but supplies a program qualified only for A: the receiving interaction exposes that mismatch before machining. Correcting the association permits interface qualification to continue; qualification of the B program’s machining behavior remains a professional contribution. SYSE.18 handles the independently controlled coating provider, and SYSE.9 connects the dimensional and process results to the receiving engineering decision.
APP-SYSE-05 works an analogous connection for software. Its constructed candidate B retains the unresolved comparison with candidate A. SYSE.31 constructs trustworthy shared-mainline feedback, SYSE.30 addresses build inputs when they prevent it, and the runtime, data and recovery methods supply their own contributions. Data change, alerting and failed-task diagnosis can also start directly at SYSE.34, SYSE.37 and SYSE.38. The manufacturing case does not acquire these software prerequisites; both cases use the common methods to connect a practitioner’s task to supported results.
SYSE-LLM-PATH — Choose and use a way to complete the task
- Situation: A person or technical agent has several ways to obtain a required result, or repeatedly wastes effort, misses needed support or fails to use its return.
- Question: Which complete available way should be used now, and what should change when the difficulty recurs?
- First useful result or blocker: A supported choice followed by the performed operation and used result, or a worthwhile probe or exact missing condition that prevents choice or completion.
- Start with: The receiving result and its conditions. Use C.38/C.11 for an unsettled choice; obtain discriminating evidence through SYSE.46 when it is missing for a recurring difficulty.
- Stop or return: Stop at the used result when the current way suffices. For recurring failure, compare complete repairs and enter only the needed construction. Return missing domain meaning, access or authority to its supplier.
Start with the result someone needs and the complete available ways to obtain it. Compare only what can change the choice: supported performance, available means, setup, checking, receiving use and total burden. C.38 supplies the comparable ways; C.11 applies the evidence and preference, or selects a worthwhile probe.
For six lots of 347 items, suppose comparable evidence supports mental decomposition, no intermediate record is required, and paper or calculator would need setup. Under the preference for the least added burden among adequate ways, choose 350 × 6 − 3 × 6. Calculate 2100 − 18, check that the subtraction removes the extra three items per lot, and report 2082. If intermediate digit operations must be retained, a ready column layout can become the least burdensome adequate way. If a calculator is already open and frees working attention needed elsewhere, it can be worthwhile despite retained mental ability: enter and check 347 × 6, obtain 2082 and use it. These are constructed conditions, not measured performance comparisons. The Reference works the changed conditions and worthwhile-probe return.
That current task can end with its used result. Repeated wrong choices open a different question. For example, an agent repeatedly retrieves a maintenance procedure. If it sees the applicable premise yet asks again without a need, SYSE.50 constructs the assistance rule. If the next input lost a needed observation or unresolved effect, SYSE.52 restores the working material. If the input and return are usable but the controller routes back to retrieval, SYSE.47 repairs that transition. SYSE.42 still binds the call, reconciles an uncertain effect and uses the actual state; a generated prediction supplies no observation.
SYSE.46 obtains the discriminating evidence and tests the changed arrangement. Compare matched work without optional documentation, with the source operation supplied, and with the agent choosing whether to obtain it. Keep required execution and checks common. The trace distinguishes an omitted necessary call from a malformed call, lost input or ignored return. Fewer calls is useful only with correct result use, necessary access and appropriate stopping. SYSE.49 constructs missing informative experience. These tests can qualify a fixed-model repair; training and division of work remain separately selected alternatives.
Choose the body that supplies the missing operation:
| Needed contribution | Full Method and first result |
|---|---|
| Apply the selected aid and use its result | SYSE.42: used contribution or rejected/unresolved input, effect or result condition. |
| Retain and recover needed records and experience | SYSE.43: resumed use with qualified recording, organization and retrieval, or the localized failure. |
| Divide contributions and recombine them | SYSE.44: used combined result or the precise dependency, conflict or source gap. |
| Change model parameters or adapters | SYSE.45: qualified changed-policy candidate or missing training contribution. |
| Qualify the agent and support in use | SYSE.46: bounded result and decision evidence, supported use limit or qualification gap. |
| Build or revise the execution procedure | SYSE.47: performable written, supervised or software candidate and its bounded comparison. |
| Construct the rule for useful assistance | SYSE.50: performer-relative rule, qualified need/benefit evidence and applicable fallback. |
| Construct a reusable tool or procedural aid | SYSE.48: tested, obtainable candidate and its conditions or construction gap. |
| Construct informative interaction experience | SYSE.49: usable task/interaction and qualified feedback for the named construction, with its transfer limits. |
| Allocate further reasoning and tool effort | SYSE.51: an observable rule with sufficient-result stop and completion reserve. |
| Prepare the next working material and tools | SYSE.52: a usable human view or bounded model input with decisive evidence and a tested recovery path. |
Use an adequate current way and its result. Enter only the construction the task needs; these results are not compulsory stages. Return unknown domain meaning or missing authority to its supplier. The connected Reference answer works the current choice and then the development comparison, retaining the actual predictive, reusable-calculation and human-learning contributions.
