B.5.EA:5.1 - A meeting that was “open” but left no room to contribute
In this constructed dialogue, a designer says, “Everyone could speak, but the review was closed.” The listener’s first interpretation is that someone interrupted. The designer rejects it.
Returning to the occasion, the designer recalls a pause after their suggestion. The chair thanked them and continued comparing the two options already on the screen. “There was no room,” the designer says, but rejects “not enough time”: the discussion continued for half an hour.
Asked whether another occasion helps explain that phrase, the designer recalls submitting a design note. Its form allowed long comments, but the decision fields still offered only the same two alternatives. “No room for comments” fails in that episode too: there was a comment box.
The listener asks, “What does the form help you notice about the meeting?” The designer answers, “Both accepted what I said as a comment. I wanted my proposal to become another option, not another comment about those two.” The second episode changes the meaning of “room” in the first; it does not just add another instance of an unproductive meeting.
The initial contradiction separates into two conditions: permission to speak and the possibility of changing the set being considered. The designer can now request consideration of a third option. The listener has not established that the chair intended to exclude it.
If the chair explains that the third option was already considered and was excluded by a constraint, the next question concerns that constraint and whether it still applies. Repeating the claim that speaking was ineffective would lose the new condition.
