C.40.CU:1 - Problem frame
Use this pattern when a material, device, living construct or supported way of working produces an unfamiliar response, or seems able to do more than its assigned function, and you want to turn that possibility into a useful repeatable application.
The working reader develops or investigates such an application and can perform or obtain the relevant domain operations. The subject is the connection between discovering a response, constructing a useful arrangement and making that arrangement reproducible. A successful probe can supply a useful clue while leaving the new application unfinished.
First useful move. Preserve one response and the conditions that produced it. Ask what receiving use it could change, and what uncertainty would change the next action. Use the response within its supported limits, or construct the smallest worthwhile contrast needed before relying on it.
The first result can be a bounded usable response, a candidate application, or an explicit missing contribution. A repeatable application additionally needs an obtainable method, capable participants and the conditions under which its result can be obtained. Use an already adequate application directly; ordinary material variation under C.40 is enough when no discovery-to-use connection is missing.
