C.40.CU:4.3 - Build the contrast that can change the next move
When an uncertainty matters, identify the few materially different accounts or values still compatible with the response. Accounts can coexist: retained state and a live helper can both contribute. Seek a comparison that separates the distinction needed by the use, rather than an exhaustive taxonomy of mechanisms.
For a consequential causal question, C.28.CM constructs the candidate mechanisms and derives a differing implication. B.5.2 supplies hypothesis generation when a useful account is missing. Change the identified intervention while preserving, measuring or otherwise accounting for the other conditions on which the inference relies. State what each possible outcome would permit.
For a question about what an indication reveals, C.16.MR constructs the response relation, including preparation, interaction and registration. C.16.IR retains the different cases that fit it. C.16.RM chooses a change to the model, computation, subject conditions or measuring arrangement by what it would make distinguishable. Repeating a test on which the consequential alternatives agree adds no resolving power merely by being another run.
Keep two environmental questions separate. Changing the demand on a fixed arrangement can help infer what its environment supplies. Keeping the task fixed while changing the environment can compare two whole arrangements. The latter does not isolate one environmental property if other contributions also change.
The domain must supply any valid reset, intervention, calibration or observation used by the comparison. For an unavailable operation, obtain or develop it, use a sufficient existing bound, or retain the explicit limitation. Naming a “control condition” does not create it.
Return the outcome as a supported response, contradicted account, conditional relation or unresolved distinction, together with the material conditions. A negative result can reject the tested arrangement without establishing an intrinsic incapacity. Stop at the smallest supported conclusion that permits the receiving action.
