CB.16:8 - Common Anti-Patterns and How to Avoid Them
| Failure in practice | Repair |
| Ask for recognition without a contribution the recipient can assess. | Explain the receiving work, proposed change, benefit, cost and needed support. |
| Treat the most visible members as the whole constituency. | Recover affected positions and state the actual representation scope. |
| Wait for unanimity while hiding the alternatives. | Use the applicable decision rule and carry meaningful disagreement explicitly. |
| Give a speaker an unlimited mandate because they know the subject. | Separate expertise from representation and bound negotiable commitments. |
| Promise other people’s time in order to obtain approval. | Request and obtain the actual allocation before relying on the promise. |
| Count access to a meeting as a changed practice. | Return the specific decision and observe whether its conditions and contribution become effective. |
| Report only the favourable response to members. | Include refusals, changed terms, unsupported conditions and needed decisions. |
| Extend one episode’s authority into permanent representation. | Obtain a current continuing mandate with returns and replacement. |
