CB.3:4.2 - Offer forms of participation that serve the person
Choose alternatives by what the person wants to do and what the activity requires. The following forms can coexist and change over time; they are not ranks.
| Wanted participation | A feasible entry | Conditions to establish |
|---|---|---|
| Find a known answer | Read or search an applicable resource | The material is findable, understandable and accessible under its actual use conditions. |
| Understand what happens here | Observe a permitted activity or inspect a worked example | The observer knows the purpose, sharing limits and how to ask later; the other participants accept the observation where required. |
| Obtain help | Bring a bounded question, privately or with preparation if necessary | Someone can help formulate it and a suitable response route is available. |
| Contribute experience or a result | Respond to one relevant request or offer a small piece of work | The contribution has a recipient, a useful scope and an attainable quality condition. |
| Organise or maintain an activity | Prepare and try the relevant organising work with support | The person understands the work, has the needed capability and resources, and accepts the actual responsibility. |
A person can enter with substantial capability and begin with a demanding contribution. Another can continue benefiting through quiet use. Do not make access to a useful answer depend on a public performance that the answer does not require. Where the arrangement has a legitimate membership or confidentiality condition, explain its purpose and offer the accessible alternative, if one exists.
For each real option, make the requested effort and available response concrete. “You may ask privately; the volunteer host checks requests on the agreed day” is assessable. “Someone will always help” needs capacity the organiser may not have. Let the person ask for a smaller contribution or say that none of the options fits.
