Practical entries
Use this framework when you are trying to make a useful cultural or community contribution: help people sustain a practice, obtain something from one another, take part in a valued activity, or make their shared experience useful elsewhere. A community organiser, participant, practitioner, sponsor or assisting agent can enter at the difficulty already present.
These are selected examples, not a catalogue or a coverage boundary. Bring the actual question to the Table of Contents when none fits. Open a pattern’s Problem frame, then its Solution and worked case. You can ask an assisting agent: “Explain this and give me your comments in ordinary language, without framework jargon.”
OFFER — Choose what would help
- Situation: You have been asked to start or grow a community, but people may need an existing resource, independent practice, expert help or company with one another.
- Question: Which contribution is worth making for these people under the available conditions?
- First useful result or blocker: A credible offer and a bounded action to obtain a response, or the particular missing contribution that prevents an honest offer.
- Start with: CB.1. Its comparison includes ways to develop carriers of a practice without requiring mutual communication.
- Stop or return: Keep an adequate existing arrangement. When the offer is sound and the remaining task is a first exchange, move to CB.2; when a professional method or permission is missing, obtain it from its actual supplier.
EXCHANGE — Make one request lead to useful help
- Situation: People have joined a group, but a shareable question still has no relevant, willing contributor or useful answer.
- Question: How can this particular exchange be completed?
- First useful result or blocker: The recipient obtains a usable next step, connection or answer and returns what it helped them do, or the organiser identifies the unavailable expertise, material, access or time.
- Start with: CB.2. Use CB.5 when the difficulty is choosing and carrying out a richer contribution such as a case clinic or project review.
- Stop or return: An urgent accountable answer may require a service. Reconsider the offer through CB.1 when the central contribution repeatedly cannot be obtained.
CONTINUE — Carry a voluntary activity through a change of organiser
- Situation: An organiser is leaving. People want some activity to continue, while access, funding or the right to decide remains unsettled.
- Question: What can continue, on whose terms, with whom actually able to perform it?
- First useful result or blocker: An agreed feasible continuation or ending. For a transfer, someone can take over and completes a first activity under the new arrangement; otherwise the missing mandate, capability or resource remains explicit. The useful activity, decision mandate, willing work with its means, first performance, settlement of what ends, and a return of what happened need to remain connected through the change.
- Start with: CB.11; use CB.13 for missing mandate, CB.7 for organising capability and CB.9 for provision and terms.
- Stop or return: Reduce, pause or end an unsupported promise. Keep an adequate existing arrangement. An unresolved incident still needs its responsible receiver under CB.8.
