EXD.2:1 - Problem frame

Use this pattern when a recipient needs to connect a principle, definition or claim with a particular instance. A worked calculation, comparison, analogy or counterexample can expose the relation that a statement alone leaves hard to use.

Start by naming the relation the instance must show. Choose values or circumstances for which the intended rule and a plausible alternative lead to a consequential difference. The first useful result is a worked instance, its correspondence to the claim and the condition that bounds its use.

A recipient who already has a sufficient direct account may need no further example. When the claim itself lacks a warrant, obtain that subject basis before choosing an illustrative instance.
