GOALS.5:4.3 - Build the objective and its KR set together
For each objective, work GOALS.2 through a successful case and a plausible false success. State what the KRs establish together, the relevant population and horizon, required conditions and evidence source. Keep an initiative or activity in the plan where it is a means; retain it as a KR only when its completed contribution is itself part of the wanted result. Qualitative professional acceptance can be more faithful than an invented percentage.
Agree the objective’s mode and any distinct modes within its contributions. In a committed undertaking, the parties plan and provide for the promised result under its terms and respond promptly to threatened failure. In an aspirational undertaking, they deliberately pursue a worthwhile uncertain improvement with agreed effort, evidence and reconsideration. Separate the uncertain outcome from any commitments made to supply particular contributions. A single label over a mixed set can hide what other teams may rely on.
Keep the forecast current and honest. An aspirational objective does not make every shortfall informative or acceptable: examine whether the method, allocation and learning were adequate. A committed objective does not become aspirational retrospectively when it is missed. If an assumed improvement is too uncertain for downstream reliance, arrange a fallback, a bounded inquiry or a changed commitment before others plan on it.
