GOALS.6:4.4 - Reconcile competing aims and adjust deliberately

Compare the relevant goals together, including current obligations, recovery and unfinished learning. Ask whether they compete for the same time, attention or opportunity, or whether one action can genuinely serve several. A shared action can reduce duplicate effort while the result claims remain distinct. Use GOALS.3 for joint organizational consequences and HCD.2:4.2a for concurrent learning.

When pursuit becomes less worthwhile or feasible, consider a change of means, a narrower next contribution, a pause or relinquishing the goal. Distinguish the specific target from the wider purpose it serves. Ending one route can preserve another; persisting can remain justified when the purpose and available way still warrant it. Include the remaining opportunity costs and the person’s values. Use GOALS.4 to make any affected commitments and continuation explicit.

Return a concrete next action and the help or decision it needs. Arrange feedback from the receiving work at an occasion when it can change the next attempt. Retain successful support when independence is unnecessary; test independent performance only when that is the claim. Recognition identifies the kind of difficulty. Assurance grounds the proposed remedy and the actual capability or outcome claimed.
