HCD.10:8 - Common Anti-Patterns and How to Avoid Them

Anti-patternWhy it failsRepair
“Review after six weeks”No repeated task, intervening history, support, or target observation is specified.Bind both episodes and their conditions before calling the schedule spacing.
“Spacing means closed-book recall”Timing and retrieval are different choices.State separated times, then select source and retrieval conditions independently.
“Mix all topics”Random order may add load without testing Method selection.Mix task families only around a named similarity and discrimination.
“Remove help every time”Support may be premature to remove or constitutive of later Work.Use an evidence-based progression rule and restore help when its assumption fails.
“Make the next task harder”Difficulty has no target relation or lowering rule.Change one decision-bearing condition and state the expected action.
“Failure means forgetting”Access, applicability, expression, adaptation, enactment, or support may be the real limit.Differentiate before assigning more practice for presumed loss.
“Week 34 proves retention”Ongoing practice and changed task/support conditions are ignored.Preserve history and use HCD.13 for the qualified delayed interpretation.
“The final test is fifteen minutes without AI”It collapses the thirty-minute core probe into one fragment and drops supplied tools.Keep the thirty-minute probe, fifteen-minute no-AI fragment, tables, calculator, narrow action, and main-task support distinct.
