HCD.19:4 - Solution

Use the compatible specification to interpret the available basis and obtain only evidence warranted by the declared use. Existing compatible observations and qualified source inspection can complete a bounded material diagnosis. Select further reader work when its attainable contribution warrants the full design, preparation, reader, provider, interpretation, delay and displaced-work burden in the actual window, with the needed capability, access, participation and protection. The instructional-material evaluation profile supplies common property meanings; the particular specification selects their use, scale and evidence requirements. Missing evidence still withholds the dependent audience, human-burden or learning claim.

HCD.19:4.1 - Fix the material, criterion, and ordinary support before the attempt

Identify the material edition, task, audience prerequisites, and consuming decision. Check that these conditions match the specification. Preserve a current material copy or precise edition reference when later repair would otherwise make the observation unrecoverable.

Derive the task from the promised work. Define the domain-correct result, acceptable alternatives, and a consequential rival response before seeing the answer. If independent selection of a rule matters, the task must leave that choice to the reader. A prompt that names the decisive distinction can test its application but no longer its uncued recognition.

Give the reader the material and declared ordinary resources. Keep the evaluator’s answer key, intended defect, unpublished rationale, and later condition unavailable when they would supply the contribution being tested. A public worked example legitimately available in reference use is part of the material’s support; record that closeness instead of treating it as a test violation.

State the observation’s purpose and conditions plainly to human participants. Do not require them to experience a foreseeable harmful consequence just to demonstrate a source defect. Subject inspection and a safe task can often settle the repair before a higher-risk use.

If the task or criterion is disputed, preserve the response and resolve the subject question. A key is evidence of what the exercise accepts, not automatic authority over the domain.

HCD.19:4.2 - Preserve what happened before and after help

Record the first answer with the reasoning, source use, or work trace necessary for the intended inference. Retain errors, omissions, justified uncertainty, and valid alternatives rather than silently replacing the answer with a corrected rendering.

Separate three support facts:

  • what the arrangement promised;
  • what was actually available to this reader;
  • what the reader actually used, including a later teacher, peer, or AI cue.

When source contribution matters, ask the reader to identify what the material supplied and what they brought from prior knowledge. This report can help interpretation but is not by itself causal proof. Check it against the material and the response. The reader may not notice a familiar inference they supplied.

For a selected C.2.8 structural-recovery question, keep the correctly recovered relations and their attribution at these conditions. Familiar knowledge may enable decoding; correcting false or absent instruction from memory does not give the material credit for that correction. A response can correctly report what the material asserts without establishing that assertion’s subject truth. Compare claims and forms separately when a revised material changes content. One response is a bounded recovery observation, not a maximum extractable amount or a learning result.

After preserving the first response, provide the declared feedback. Record its content and timing relative to the response. Keep a teacher’s answer-bearing explanation distinct from a prompt that merely asks the reader to inspect an available criterion. Both may be appropriate support, but they permit different conclusions about independent work.

No universal number of readers or tasks establishes adequacy. Select evidence for the property and consequence at issue. A cold intended reader lacks the author’s private context; that condition does not erase the reader’s real expertise or turn an agent into a novice human.

HCD.19:4.3 - Read the material at the reach of the claim

Inspect the meaning-bearing material that supports the task: the definition, example, representation, criterion, return, and any prerequisite relation. Follow a dependence until its needed contribution is supplied or its absence becomes clear. Do not stop at a heading that names it.

For a whole-route judgement, read the complete declared route in its actual sequence. Keep an unresolved question or dependency open until its endpoint. Independent local judgements do not establish that the route works as a whole. If several readers inspect parts, the integrator still needs sufficient connected evidence to judge the complete route and its cross-part dependencies.

At a narrative transition, use NSTD.8’s attachment question: what question is current, what does this block add, why is it needed here, and where is its contribution used next? Inspect both endpoints. At the next use, distinguish structure already introduced or available through legitimate prerequisites from the genuinely new relation the reader must construct.

A later explanation can support the present task when a precise, usable return makes it available now. Otherwise the later explanation does not repair an unsupported operation at this prefix. The repair may be one contrast, a worked step, a map, a recap, or a changed order.

For an existing product, current content and reader-use evidence can support a current-quality diagnosis without original manufacturing records. If source fidelity or actual construction history is part of the promise, use the separate evidence branches of NSTD.6. A plausible reconstruction of how a book could have been written is not an observation of its author’s actions.

HCD.19:4.4 - Judge the contribution before assigning a material value

Compare the response with the qualified criterion. Distinguish a correct result, an error, an unfinished attempt, an unobserved contribution, and a task or criterion defect.

Then trace the material’s part in that outcome. The following rival explanations select different next moves.

ObservationWhat to distinguishDiscriminating next move
The reader cannot justify the next operationMissing explanation, missing prerequisite, or a question the material never promised to answerInspect the promise and available preceding relation; try the smallest declared aid without relabelling the first answer.
A correct-looking example supports a wrong ruleA non-discriminating example versus a false or absent subject relationUse a case on which the intended and rival rules produce different results; inspect both rules explicitly.
The key rejects a valid responseCriterion defect versus reader errorResolve the domain criterion and preserve the valid response before changing the explanation or instruction.
Separated concepts can be repeated but not combinedMissing relation, lost attachment, or unavailable prefix supportInspect the two endpoints and the exact point of use; supply the missing relation or access, not another catalogue.
Success begins after the teacher names the decisive conditionEffective supported continuation versus independent recognitionRetain the helped result; use a fresh uncued case or reader if independent recognition is the live claim.
An expert succeeds despite a false explanationPrior-knowledge rescue versus support actually supplied by the materialPreserve the source defect and withhold untested adequacy for less-prepared readers. That stronger use needs qualified audience evidence; select its collection only for an obtainable, worthwhile contribution.
A removed sentence makes no differenceAnother public passage supplies the contribution, or the perturbation was irrelevantRecord the successful recovery. Revise the defect hypothesis rather than redefine success as failure.
A prepared agent succeeds while a human reports difficultyDifferent knowledge, task, help, or experienced burdenKeep the human report and narrow the untested human claim now. Preserve the supported material diagnosis. Select a timed observation of the relevant reader and segment only when obtainable under the declared conditions and worth its whole burden for the receiving decision.

An unsuccessful attempt alone does not diagnose the person or prove a material defect. A successful attempt alone does not prove that the material supplies every needed contribution.

Assign values only after recovering the material condition, evidence basis, and repair reach. Apply the specification’s anchors and return every selected coordinate, including lawful missingness. A bounded diagnostic that borrows a few questions says so and claims no complete vector. Resolve adjacent-value disagreement by the meaning and reach of repair, not by averaging ordinal labels.

HCD.19:4.5 - Diagnose the smallest complete repair

State the limiting defect in operational terms. “The report rule includes incident time in effort” identifies a repairable relation; “unclear” does not. Locate the explanation, task, criterion, representation, or support arrangement in which that relation changes use.

Trace its actual dependents. A central distinction used in a definition, table, interruption example, and later resource comparison needs a connected repair. A wrong figure address can require only the return and its receiving use. Several affected words are not necessarily several defects; one wrong premise can control them all.

Propose the replacement and the reader result it should make possible. Identify the useful contributions to preserve, including subject truth, correct alternatives, expressive details that carry meaning, accessible representation, and the help the course actually promises. State the cost or trade-off that could make another repair better.

Return this result to E.23 for repair selection and iteration. The material-specific contribution is the supported defect, its dependence reach, protected values, and discriminating next use. There is no second improvement cycle here.

If the problem is unavailable promised teaching support, return it to the support arrangement’s owner. If the promised audience cannot meet a necessary prerequisite, supply instruction or revise the promise. Enlarging the handout is only one possible repair.

HCD.19:4.6 - Repeat the affected use and stop at the supported conclusion

After repair, recheck the changed relation with its task and direct consumer. Reuse observations and values whose premises remain unchanged. Moving an explanation can reopen its former and new attachment and next-use prefix even when its words are identical.

Use a meaningfully changed condition when the question concerns the reach of the repair. Change the participant population, relevant condition, boundary, or decision so that a plausible overgeneralization would now fail. Preserve the same reader when studying supported continuation; choose a fresh task or reader when prior answer exposure would defeat the needed inference.

A preparatory failed attempt may be retained when subsequent instruction examines and resolves the attempted alternatives. If that resolution is absent, labelling the difficulty “productive” supplies no evidence. Similarly, immediate ease is not the target when the task deliberately asks the learner to construct a new relation with adequate support.

Return what changed and what did not: material contribution, actual response, assistance, remaining defect, and evidence needed for a stronger claim. An observed improved response under support is different from independent performance, unfamiliar-work transfer, delayed retention, and causal learning effect. Use the corresponding HCD evidence patterns when those claims are required.

Stop when the selected use or repair decision is supported, or return the exact criterion or evidence gap that withholds the requested stronger conclusion. Keep independently supported material findings and narrow an untested audience, burden or learning claim immediately. An unavailable or unwarranted human observation does not prevent this bounded result; a selected repair still needs its affected-use check. Do not broaden to the whole book because one bounded repair succeeded. Broaden when the changed premise or route actually affects more uses.
