HCD.21:5.4 - Improve the cohort without concealing its weakest group

Eight participants A–H have permitted cases, compatible confirmed windows and the calculation preparation needed for the diagnostic comparison. Their actual first responses differ. A and B can already reconstruct the supplied evidence-to-model relation; C, D, G and H favour the resistance account; E and F favour the measurement account. The chosen peer-explanation task needs at least one usable initial reconstruction and contrasting grounds in every group. This is a condition of this task, not a permanent rank of the people or a requirement for all group learning. Qualified help and personal turns remain under HCD.20/.22.

The organiser compares two allocations manually. Familiar pairs A/B and E/F would prefer to stay together.

AllocationGroupsUsable initial reconstructions per groupFamiliar pairs retained
XA, B, C, D; E, F, G, H2 and 0A/B and E/F
YA, C, D, E; B, F, G, H1 and 1Neither A/B nor E/F

Both allocations average one usable reconstruction per group. That average hides X’s missing input in the second group. Swapping B and E produces Y: the first group loses one initially prepared explanation, while the second obtains one; both retain a rival account to discuss. Y meets this task’s minimum from the available first responses. It does not establish an optimal grouping or improved learning merely by distributing A and B.

The organiser allows eight minutes to reconfirm the two changed groups and each moved learner four minutes to read the new counterpart’s short material: eight additional learner-minutes in total. These are finite planning allowances to verify. If participants decline the change or confirmation takes longer, Y’s availability or burden changes. A large-cohort algorithm could propose the same swap, but its aggregate score would still need this check.

Keeping X is a serious alternative when continuity supplies a needed contribution. It first needs a qualified preparation opportunity that produces the missing usable account in the second group, or a different task whose initial conditions that group meets. Obtain and observe that result rather than raising the weight on familiarity to hide the gap. If B and E cannot exchange material under their permissions, Y is excluded and the preparation or task alternative becomes the live question.
