HCD.23:4.1 - Give the exchange a reasoning object

Select a step that changes an action: choosing a model, applying a condition, interpreting an observation or reconciling two apparently conflicting results. Make the task, permitted resources and subject criterion available. Use HCD.22 to arrange a needed dependence between contributions; explanation can also use the same complete material given to everyone.

Obtain starting responses when they serve the question. A short answer with one ground often exposes more than a confidence rating. Keep it available if later comparison needs to show what changed. If learners cannot yet produce a meaningful response, begin from two worked attempts or a supported demonstration and ask them to reconstruct the differing step. This teaches an explanation; it does not provide evidence of an earlier independent choice.

Choose the visibility condition deliberately. Private preparation is useful when the learner must supply an initial selection before a peer supplies it. Immediate shared manipulation can be appropriate when participants need to observe the same event. Preserve an earlier version when its loss would prevent reflection, even if later answers are visible. Membership, visibility and access to one’s own prior work are separate choices.
