HCD.Preface:7 - Architectural Rationale
HCD organizes the repertoire around working questions whose inputs and useful results can differ. Demand can be supported while diagnosis remains open; a practice correction can be useful before transfer is demonstrated; an operational assessor contribution can exist before any learner receives it. Separating these Methods lets a practitioner obtain the missing result and preserve established contributions. Combining them around later Work keeps that separation from becoming a collection of unrelated techniques. The cost is explicit attention to conditions and interfaces; reuse compatible results and keep the account only as detailed as the receiving decision requires.
Several serious approaches can supply part or all of a particular development arrangement. Compare them by the contribution needed in the same working situation.
| Approach | Practical strength and appropriate use | Why HCD keeps a broader repertoire, and when to prefer the approach directly |
|---|---|---|
| A complex-skill programme designed through 4C/ID | Learning tasks connect supportive information for reasoning, procedural information during routine work, and additional part-task practice where automaticity needs more practice. This supplies a concrete architecture for a complex-skill curriculum. | HCD.2/.5/.6 adapt this task-and-support organization while retaining diagnosis, personal baselines, complete resource comparison and later evidence questions. A designer whose demand, audience and delivery conditions are settled can use 4C/ID directly for that programme. HCD remains useful when a human target, available support, continued development or a particular transfer/retention inference is still undecided. |
| Cognitive apprenticeship and supervised participation | Modelling and coaching can expose expert reasoning in situated tasks; guided participation provides access to work that a text alone may not supply. Prefer this form when competent supervision and suitable tasks can supply the target contribution within the consequence and resource limits. | HCD.5 compares the development contribution, HCD.7 establishes provider and access conditions, and HCD.8 addresses an exact missing contribution. Protected or infrequent work may require bounded simulations or separately prepared cases to make the needed observation possible. The trade-off is access to situated judgement versus supervision burden and the variation actually available; the label alone cannot settle the local comparison. |
| A learning product as the main development arrangement | A course, guide or interactive product can coordinate explanation, practice, pacing and feedback for a defined audience, and can make an already selected development design usable at scale. HCD.28 connects that offer with the required subject basis and actual supply; Learning Product practice supplies Guide/Slidement construction within its own applicable profile. | Use that product directly when it fits the person’s task, entry evidence and support. HCD adds the comparison when fit, alternatives, finite burdens or later-Work evidence are unresolved, and, through HCD.28, develops the whole-product construction before particular learners are known. A course’s audience assumptions remain design assumptions until the person-specific questions they matter to are answered. |
| A generic evaluation or testing framework | A framework for claims, tasks, observations and intended interpretations helps an assessor obtain evidence for a bounded judgement. HCD.11 adapts that contribution from evidence-centred design and the Testing Standards. | HCD distinguishes the development decisions that use the judgement: diagnosis, local revision, unfamiliar transfer, delay, support dependence and continuing arrangement. Direct evaluation is enough when only its bounded judgement is needed. The wider HCD combination earns its cost when the same result requires a different development response, or when the proposed assessment would change the contribution being observed. |
The shared source line is therefore task- and evidence-sensitive human development. Whole tasks and expertise-sensitive support inform what to practise; feedback, retrieval, spacing and task similarity inform candidate practice changes; assessment sources qualify what can be inferred. Provider and workplace-learning sources connect learning opportunities to the conditions of participation and later Work. Each family contributes a bounded answer, not a proof that the whole local programme works. The Source use account and each body’s SoTA-Echoing section identify the specific adopted or adapted claim, population, task, support, horizon and limit. Reopen a choice when those conditions change or a serious alternative changes the next useful action; preserve unaffected source uses.
