MDPE.12:1 - The Recurring Difficulty
Music and Dance can be observed through different access relations. A microphone records sound but not visible movement or partner pressure. Video records selected geometry but can miss effort, contact, attention, and what a partner feels. A performer reports control and surprise unavailable to a camera. A partner experiences timing and readability through interaction. A teacher, judge, listener, community participant, historian, curator, or researcher brings another capability and another use. A sensor supplies indications; it does not interpret them by itself unless an identified inference Method and performer of that Method do the work.
The same performance can be technically precise, hard for its performer, unreadable to a partner, exciting for one audience, rejected by another scene, amplified by a platform, and short-lived culturally. These statements concern different subjects, populations, relations, and time spans. They cannot be merged by the word success.
Projects nevertheless overread the easiest signal:
- onset detection becomes “good rhythm”;
- performer confidence becomes transferred capability;
- applause or attendance becomes recognition;
- competition rank becomes artistic value;
- a press article, academic citation, standard, or university programme becomes evidence of prevalent practice;
- platform visibility becomes cultural retention.
This produces a systematic distortion. Ballet, formal concert practice, government standards, or highly publicised engineering Methods can dominate institutional sources while current adult practice or commercial project Work follows other Methods. Published visibility is evidence about discourse and availability; it is not automatically evidence of actual use.
The opposite error demands a large controlled study before any decision. Most Music and Dance projects cannot obtain one. They then either stop learning or hide intuition behind unqualified prose. A practitioner judgement or expert estimate can support a bounded, reversible move when its basis, uncertainty, and update condition are visible.
