MDPE.22:1 - Problem

A Music-or-Dance practice is produced and reproduced through more than performers and material. Bodies and instruments are developed; rehearsal and social Work recur; venues admit some uses and exclude others; teachers and media make some distinctions easy to transmit; audiences and selectors learn what to notice; archives and platforms make some variants available; organizers allocate time, access, attention, and resources.

Projects often intervene at the most visible object. They publish a manifesto, build a tool, book a stage, add a course, upload a video, or fund a festival. The intervention can be completed while the old environment keeps selecting, teaching, presenting, and reproducing the old practice.

The failure becomes expensive when:

  • performer capability is developed for Work that never obtains outside training;
  • a venue or platform changes visibility but not receiving enactment or continuation;
  • a new selection arrangement removes useful variation or rewards a proxy such as camera readability;
  • infrastructure exists but no capable and authorized Agent performs the needed teaching, organizing, maintenance, access, or other recurring Work; when a formal assignment matters, no obtaining assignment connects a holder to the needed local kind and contribution;
  • one support change moves burden or risk onto teachers, organizers, maintainers, performers, or source communities; or
  • a local result is advertised as culture-wide change and prevents further testing.

The project must connect an environment change to one actual Music-or-Dance result within the scope it can influence.
