MDPE.Preface:7.2 - Dance: making movement usable for its participants
Use the Dance profile when a movement intention must survive embodiment, interaction, and its receiving use.
Partner connection, balance, weight transfer, movement quality, space, fatigue, and the relation to music can
change both the Method and its evidence. A social pair’s need to read a partner differs from a staged group’s
need to present a chosen phrase. The creation brief names that use before selecting choreography, teaching,
rehearsal, or observation Methods. MDPE.3 tests the resulting coordination; MDPE.10 develops a limiting
performing capability; MDPE.12 distinguishes kinematic indications, participant experience, and judgement.
The Balboa-and-brushes material used in MDPE.3, MDPE.10, and MDPE.14 makes a useful narrower problem
visible: a dancer can keep the foot in motion while a partner cannot tell when the weight event occurs. A
prospective trial separates continuing floor contact from the pressure or weight event to be perceived. The
pair compares a continuous shuffle with a version that makes the chosen weight arrival clearer, obtains the
partner’s timing report, and then varies partner or musical conditions. The result sought is a partner-readable
coordination relation under those conditions. Foot-contact timing alone cannot settle it. This is a Method-design
example, with no claimed result from an actual learner or pair.
Use the staged-production branch when dancers, costumes, props, light, sound, venue, and presentation must work
together for a commissioned performance. The NDT production case discussed below shows why a specialist choice
must return to its effect on the intended Dance use. Use the social branch when changing partners,
participation, or responsive movement determines success. Neither branch supplies the other’s assurance: a
camera-readable group phrase leaves social transfer untested, while successful social interaction leaves a
touring production’s realization questions unanswered. MDPE.6 helps select the changes when a project moves
between them.
