Part I - Engineering Subject and Style-Development Architecture

MDPE.8 - Characterize the Music-or-Dance Work, Methods, and Change Question

Pattern type: Music-and-Dance engineering entry pattern

Public result: a bounded Music-or-Dance development focus with a current characterization, live alternatives or material uncertainty, and the smallest decision that matters

MDPE.8:0 - Use This When

Use this pattern when a project says it will create, improve, teach, perform, preserve, spread, or modernize music, dance, a style, a school, or a scene, but the next decision still has no clear subject.

This ambiguity is expensive. A team can improve a recording while the performance Method remains unusable, train one dancer while the partnered configuration remains broken, publish a course while no learner transfers the capability, or promote a style name while the practice that made it recognizable disappears.

The first useful result is a bounded development focus. It contains a current characterization, the live alternatives that could still change the work or one material uncertainty that prevents forming them, and the smallest decision that matters. It names:

  • the deciding Agent and the decision now waiting;
  • the Music-or-Dance Work that matters;
  • the subject expected to change and what is known about its current state;
  • the competing subjects, Methods, explanations, or change questions that remain live;
  • the uncertainty or observation that can change which alternative is current;
  • the capable Agent, bounded Work, and Method that the Work will enact to make or test the selected change; and
  • the nearest stop, return, or unresolved dependency.

Stop when the deciding Agent can select the next bounded question or name the observation needed before that selection. Do not use this pattern when a direct composition, choreography, improvisation, rehearsal, teaching, production, event, preservation, ethnographic, historical, or Systems Engineering Method already names the subject and returns the result needed by the current decision.

MDPE.8:1 - The Recurring Difficulty

Ordinary domain words often join unlike objects and activities:

  • a performance occurrence and the material or recording left by it;
  • a performing capability and the Work in which that capability is exercised;
  • a Method for composing, moving, partnering, teaching, judging, or organizing and a description of that Method;
  • a performing whole made from performer, body or effector, instrument, partner, software, venue equipment, sensing, timing, and correction relations;
  • a practice or style line that is produced, taught, recognized, selected, transmitted, and retained through many Work occurrences and several populations; and
  • a medium, support System, or supporting capability: a venue, school, festival series, archive, platform, instrument-making capability, or software service, for example.

Several of these can be active at once. During one dance, a dancer or pair performs Dance Work in which bodily regulation, movement, partner coordination, phrase shaping, and participation all occur. That Work can enact several Methods at the relevant holonic or functional positions, including a style-specific Method. During one music performance, a musician or robot performs Music Work in which effector control, attacks and continuous sound, phrase shaping, and ensemble coordination occur; that Work can likewise enact several Methods. This simultaneous organization is not a first–then Method unfolding. Rehearsal before performance or building an instrument before playing it is a different relation.

When the project does not distinguish these subjects, evidence migrates between claims. One performance becomes “proof” of cultural continuation; one video becomes “proof” of transmission; one course description becomes “proof” of capability; or one autonomous robot performance becomes “proof” that the robot chose how the practice should develop.

MDPE.8:2 - Solution

Produce a bounded Music-or-Dance development focus small enough to guide the next Work and rich enough to prevent the wrong subject or question from being selected.

The following is a compact Method description, not a mandatory Work sequence. A practitioner may revisit any distinction as evidence changes the question.

MDPE.8:2.1 - Begin with the pending decision

Write the decision in ordinary language and name the Agent who will use the result. Examples:

  • Which Zouk teaching and partnering change should we trial next?
  • Can this robot–instrument configuration perform the selected material under live tempo changes?
  • Which capability prevents a pair from transferring a figure into social improvisation?
  • Should this festival change its judging and presentation arrangement?
  • What must be rebuilt before this nearly lost repertoire can be performed again?

If no decision, action, or later use can be named, state that missing decision or use as the blocker.

MDPE.8:2.2 - Name the subject expected to change

Choose the narrowest subject that still changes the decision. Common subject kinds include:

  • musical or movement material;
  • one performance occurrence or its production and presentation arrangement;
  • a performing Agent’s capability;
  • a performer–instrument, partnered, ensemble, robotic, or hybrid performing whole;
  • a Music-or-Dance Method or Method family;
  • a teaching, recognition, selection, transmission, or continuation relation;
  • an event, school, venue, archive, platform, or other supporting System; or
  • the architecture by which a practice or style is produced and reproduced.

These are examples, not a closed classification. If two subjects can change independently, keep two questions or state their relation; do not hide both under the dance or the music.

State whether the subject and relation exist now, are proposed for possible future realization, are known only through a qualified source, or remain unavailable. A persuasive brief, score, choreography, model, course, or platform page does not by itself bring the proposed practice into existence.

MDPE.8:2.3 - Recover the Work and Method that matter

Name the bounded Work whose result can change the decision and the domain Method it enacts. Distinguish:

  • the performing Agent from non-agentive instruments, software, records, and other participating Systems;
  • a reusable Method from its MethodDescription and from dated Work;
  • performance Work from engineering or inquiry Work that changes or studies the practice;
  • simultaneous contribution at several holonic scales from a temporal or logical unfolding inside one Method;
  • capability-development Work from later Work in which capability is exercised; and
  • enabling or build-the-builder Work from the performance it later enables.

Use Systems Engineering when the changed subject is an engineered performer, instrument, interface, venue, platform, school, archive, or other selected System. Use Method Engineering when the changed subject is a Method, Method family, MethodDescription, Method base, enactment support, or Method trial. This pattern adds the Music-and-Dance distinctions and receiving decision; it does not repeat the general engineering Method.

MDPE.8:2.4 - Bound a cultural claim only when it changes the decision

If the question concerns a style, school, scene, tradition, or practice, state which relation is current: generation, transmission, reconstruction, recognition, selection, retention, loss, or a feedback effect on later production. Name the population, place, period, carriers, and observation needed by the decision.

A style name, press attention, official listing, course, archive, platform count, or one performance supplies no general continuation claim. Use current C.36 and C.36.P for the cultural-evolution case. Use MDPE.21 when the project must design how a style is produced and reproduced, MDPE.19 for present continuation, and MDPE.20 for competing future trajectories.

MDPE.8:2.5 - Keep live alternatives and uncertainty visible

Do not let the first plausible formulation erase a competing subject or explanation that would change the next Work. State at least two live alternatives when more than one survives. When the project cannot yet form alternatives, state the material uncertainty—for example, individual capability versus partnered coordination, a changed artifact versus a changed Method, or local recurrence versus wider recognition—and the smallest observation that can resolve it. Alternatives that answer different decisions remain separate questions.

MDPE.8:2.6 - Select the first result that can change Work

Name the direct Method or DPF result that can answer the change question. For example:

  • MDPE.9 or a direct composition, choreography, improvisation, or rehearsal-prototyping Method for several performance candidates and their dispositions;
  • MDPE.10 or a direct capability-development Method for demonstrated transfer to representative Work;
  • MDPE.3 or a direct ensemble, partnering, staging, instrument-interface, or Systems Engineering Method for a tested performing whole;
  • MDPE.12 or a direct observation and comparison Method for a bounded decision;
  • MDPE.17 or a direct teaching and transmission Method for receiving enactment; or
  • a direct historical, ethnographic, causal, preservation, production, event, or organizational Method when that Method already returns the needed result.

If the result is unavailable, name what is missing—a MethodDescription, capable Agent, input, evidence, authority, access, or relation—what decision it blocks, and what observation permits another attempt.

MDPE.8:3 - First Useful Result

A short result can be written as:

[Deciding Agent] must decide [decision] about [typed Music-or-Dance subject]. Current Work and configuration are [current characterization]. [Alternative A] and [alternative B] remain live, or [material uncertainty] prevents a responsible choice between them. [Observation] can change which question or option is current. The project will use [Method or supplied DPF result] to obtain [first result]. It stops or returns when [condition].

Use this description to guide the next decision. Establish any claimed change from observations of the result.

MDPE.8:4 - Worked Cases

MDPE.8:4.1 - A social-dance style project

A local Zouk school says it wants dancers to remain responsive to unfamiliar partners while using a wider range of music. In the present class, dancers reproduce the taught sequence with familiar partners, but transfer to social Work has not been observed. Two questions remain live:

  • does the limiting relation lie in individual movement capability and therefore call for changed embodied exercises; or
  • does it lie in partnered cue–response and context-conditioned retrieval and therefore call for rotating-partner, varied-music practice?

The material uncertainty is whether a familiar-partner classroom success hides the first or second limitation. The smallest deciding observation is a bounded social trial with unfamiliar partners and varied music, recording partner-readable response, loss of balance, recovery, and the style-bearing timing distinction. The teachers therefore select the partnered-transfer question for the next trial while retaining the individual-capability question if failure remains across partners. The result is a development focus, not the claim that the wider Zouk practice has changed.

MDPE.8:4.2 - Shimon

Shimon can continue seeded material and perform the result during a bounded music occurrence. That supports composition and performance claims about the robot and its configuration. It does not show that Shimon selected the later practice-development question. If the human team chooses how the composition Method, instrument interface, or public practice should change, the team is the practice-developing Agent; Shimon is the performing Agent only for the Work it actually performs.

MDPE.8:4.3 - A dance party

At one party, muscles and sensing function, a dancer executes movements, partners coordinate, phrases unfold, couples dance several styles, organizers run the event, and participants reproduce a social-dance culture. These descriptions can all be true at once. A project that wants to improve a turn therefore asks whether the changed subject is body capability, a figure Method, partnered timing, floor organization, teaching, or the style’s wider recognition. The answer selects the subject to change, not a first stage in a lifecycle.

MDPE.8:4.4 - The Call

The project joins a songbook, choir Work, recordings, datasets, models, an installation, and participant rules. “Develop AI music” is too coarse. One useful question may concern choir–model musical material; another the recording and model System; another the proposed participant practice. Each receives its own Method and evidence. Produced artifacts and an exhibition do not by themselves establish a durable style or later cultural retention.

MDPE.8:5 - Checks and Common Repairs

Recheck only a claim whose source or receiving use changed. Popularity, official status, or a newer publication is not enough by itself.

MDPE.8:7 - Relations

  • MDPE.1 uses a compatible development focus—current characterization, live alternatives or uncertainty, and the smallest decision—to frame one project; it does not have to follow MDPE.8 as a fixed stage.

  • MDPE.21 and MDPE.24 become relevant when the question concerns style-production architecture or the formation of a new practice whole.

  • MDPE.9, MDPE.10, MDPE.3, MDPE.11, MDPE.12, and MDPE.17 return different domain results. One result does not establish the others.

  • MDPE.14 uses the bounded development focus when the named subject, live alternatives or uncertainty, affected Systems, or current decision changes the practice conflict.

  • MDPE.16 uses it when the current subject, later use, live alternatives or material uncertainty changes which branches should remain available.

  • MDPE.18 uses it when the current practice subject or decision changes which source, lineage, reconstruction, or gap claims are worth recovering. The focus does not itself supply those claims.

  • Systems Engineering supplies results for selected engineered Systems. Method Engineering supplies results for changed Methods. MDPE retains the Music-and-Dance subject, domain Method, representative Work, evidence, and receiving decision.

  • Composition, choreography, improvisation, teaching, rehearsal, performance, production, curation, historical, ethnographic, preservation, and other direct Methods remain independently maintained.

MDPE.8:End

MDPE.1 - Frame a Music-or-Dance Work, Practice, Style, or Medium Project

Pattern type: Music-and-Dance project-framing pattern

Public result: one scale-bound Music-or-Dance project brief

MDPE.1:0 - Use This When

Use this pattern when a project is ready to commit people, equipment, venues, money, teaching, publication, or engineering effort, but its “creative brief” still moves silently among four different ambitions:

  • produce one artifact or performance occurrence;
  • establish or change a repeatable performance practice;
  • deliberately develop a style line across several variants and generations; or
  • build or change a medium or support System through which Music or Dance is produced, learned, presented, recognized, or retained.

Choosing the wrong subject can let one local output satisfy its acceptance criteria while the intended project result remains absent. A good concert does not establish a reproducible practice. A course does not establish learner capability. A platform does not establish a style. A manifesto does not establish that the proposed Method is enacted.

The first useful result is a project brief that states the selected subject and scale, intended Work and use, what must be preserved and may vary, the material conflict or unresolved live choice, whose recognition matters, which Agent can decide, what Work is expected to realize the proposal, and which observation reopens the decision. When two commitments cannot both be satisfied, keep the conflict visible in the brief and state which decision it changes. Do not use this pattern when a commission, choreography, production, co-creation, event, Systems Engineering, or other direct Method has already settled those questions and returns the project basis needed by the next Work.

MDPE.1:1 - The Recurring Difficulty

Music-and-Dance projects often begin with a compact phrase: “make a piece”, “launch a dance style”, “build an AI music practice”, “run a festival”, or “preserve the tradition”. The phrase can coordinate enthusiasm while leaving different Agents committed to different results.

Four project subjects recur:

Project subjectWhat the project changesEvidence that begins to matter
Artifact or performance occurrenceMusical or movement material, production, and one bounded performance or artifact.The occurrence happened or the artifact was produced and used under the stated conditions.
Performance practiceA repeatable Method, performing capability, configured whole, teaching and receiving conditions.Representative Work can be performed again with stated continuity and variation.
Style-development lineHow variants are produced, recognized, selected, transmitted, retained, and fed back into later production.The proposed architecture changes those relations locally; later distributed uptake remains a separate claim.
Medium or support SystemInstruments, software, venue, platform, school, archive, event series, provider, or another enabling System.The realized System enables the named Music-or-Dance Work and meets its use and assurance conditions.

The four subjects can be connected and developed together, but they are not one object and do not share one success test. A project may need several linked briefs rather than one ambiguous brief.

MDPE.1:2 - Solution

Frame the project around the subject whose change will make the next commitment worthwhile. The sections below describe the reasoning needed for the brief; they are not a fixed lifecycle.

MDPE.1:2.1 - Select the subject and scale

Start from the decision named by MDPE.8 or from an equally clear direct project question. Choose one primary subject from the table above. Name any linked subjects and the relations through which their results will be used.

For example, a festival project may change an event-production System while also testing whether its curation and teaching relations support a style-development line. The festival is not thereby the style, and one edition is not the whole event series.

When the primary or linked subject is an engineered System, select the Systems Engineering result that is actually missing:

Missing engineering resultDirect Systems Engineering pattern
Which actual or intended System is the project System-of-Interest, and when that focus must reopenSYSE.1 — Choose and Reopen the Project System-of-Interest
Which linked use and System concepts make the intended value and boundary testableSYSE.2 — Develop Linked Use and System Concepts

Which recursive realization arrangement can create, integrate, qualify, operate, and change the SystemSYSE.3 — Plan the Next System-Realization Action (Recursive Realization Network)
Which assurance claim, evidence, uncertainty, and return must accompany the resultSYSE.4 — Prepare Engineering Assurance and Return Evidence

These are conditional exits, not a mandatory sequence. MDPE.1 specializes their use by stating which Music-or-Dance Work, style distinction, performance relation, and cultural consequence the engineered System is meant to enable. Use Method Engineering when the project subject is a Method or Method family rather than the engineered System or performance result.

MDPE.1:2.2 - State the intended Work and first use

Name the Work that will exercise or use the changed subject and the maintained domain Method it enacts. Examples of this Work include composing, choreographing, practising, teaching, partnering, improvising, rehearsing, performing, listening, judging, curating, producing, presenting, and archiving.

Name the performing or deciding Agent in ordinary language. Keep the technical U.System, SystemRole kind, assignment, capability, and Work attribution recoverable when the claim relies on them. Instruments, software, scores, recordings, venues, and publications can contribute without becoming Agents.

MDPE.1:2.3 - Separate proposal from realization

State what exists now and what the project proposes. A brief, score, choreography, MethodDescription, lesson programme, model, architectural description, or manifesto can describe a possible future. It does not make the performance, practice, style relation, or supporting System exist.

Name the realization Work expected to produce or change the world-side result. Name the earliest observation that would show whether the proposed result works with the performers, participants, instruments, partners, venues, and other receiving conditions.

MDPE.1:2.4 - Choose preservation and variation

State which distinctions must survive and which may change. Depending on the project, these may concern rhythm, timing, sound, movement quality, partner response, form, improvisational freedom, instrument relation, social function, participation, authorship, lineage, or another domain characteristic.

Avoid both extremes. Freezing one manifestation can destroy a living practice; unlimited variation can erase the distinction the project meant to develop. MDPE.12 and MDPE.23 become relevant when the project needs an observation or developed recognition capability to test the boundary.

When preservation, variation, safety, access, visibility, cost, authorship, participation, or cultural continuity cannot all be improved together, name the material conflict or unresolved live choice. State the affected Agents and Systems, which commitments cannot presently coexist, which decision the conflict changes, and what observation or authority is needed before choosing. Do not turn a disputed objective into an agreed requirement.

MDPE.1:2.5 - Name participants, affected Systems, and decision rights

Name who creates, performs, learns, teaches, curates, organizes, funds, publishes, senses, judges, and bears the effects as far as the decision needs them. Technical ability, authorship, funding, ownership of a venue, or platform visibility does not by itself grant authority over another Agent or a whole cultural practice.

When participation, access, cultural material, visibility, safety, attribution, or stewardship changes, state the authority, permission, commitment, consent, contest, refusal, exit, or revision relation on which the proposed decision relies. Leave a disputed part open when that relation is missing.

MDPE.1:2.6 - Set the recognition and reopen boundary

Name the Agent or population expected to distinguish or use the result, the conditions of recognition, and the first observation that can defeat the project basis. Familiarity with a label, press attention, official listing, or one approving response is not a recognition Method.

The brief closes when the next project commitment can be made or refused without changing the subject by accident. It reopens when representative Work, participant response, feasibility, authority, safety, recognition, cost, or another named condition defeats a relied-on claim.

MDPE.1:3 - First Useful Result

A scale-bound brief can fit in one page:

  • Project decision: [commitment now waiting].
  • Primary subject and scale: [artifact or occurrence / performance practice / style-development line / medium or support System].
  • Intended Work and use: [who does what, using which domain Method, and for whom].
  • Linked subjects: [only those whose result is used, with the relation stated].
  • Existing and proposed: [what obtains now; what could exist after realization Work].
  • Preserve / vary: [domain distinctions and allowed variation].
  • Conflict or unresolved live choice: [commitments that cannot presently coexist, affected Agents or Systems, and the decision or observation that can resolve it].
  • Recognition boundary: [who must discriminate or use what, under which conditions].
  • Participants and decision rights: [deciding Agent, affected Agents or Systems, and relied-on authority or permission].
  • Realization and first test: [Work expected to produce the change and the earliest representative observation].
  • Stop or reopen: [condition that blocks, defeats, or returns the decision].

The brief guides Work. Assess success from evidence of the result.

MDPE.1:4 - Worked Cases

MDPE.1:4.1 - A filled brief for a local Zouk trial

This constructed project example uses the practitioner source to ground the kind of change. The example is illustrative, rather than a historical account of Brazilian Zouk. A local school is deciding whether to commit six weeks of teacher time and one social event to a changed partnered practice. Its brief is:

  • Project decision: fund and run one bounded class-and-social trial, or keep the present course unchanged.
  • Primary subject and scale: one repeatable local partnered-performance practice; not one choreography and not the whole Zouk style or population.
  • Intended Work and use: teachers use embodied and partnered exercises; dancers then improvise with unfamiliar partners to varied music at the local social event.
  • Linked subjects: the teaching Method and event arrangement supply conditions for the practice trial; neither is identified with the practice.
  • Existing and proposed: current learners reproduce taught sequences with familiar partners; the proposal introduces rotating-partner cue–response tasks, varied music, and supervised social-floor trials.
  • Preserve / vary: preserve partner-readable response, safety, balance, and the intended timing distinction; vary figures, partners, music, and phrase choices.
  • Conflict or unresolved live choice: a filmed showcase rewards fixed camera-legible choreography, while the stated project needs unfamiliar-partner social transfer. That fixed-choreography showcase would not test transfer to unfamiliar partners in social improvisation. The school selects social transfer for this commitment and leaves a showcase as a separate later project.
  • Recognition boundary: participating partners must distinguish and use the cue–response relation during social Work; teacher approval or a style label is insufficient.
  • Participants and decision rights: the two teachers decide the local teaching trial; dancers consent and may refuse or leave an exercise; the venue controls its safety conditions. None decides for the wider culture.
  • Realization and first test: teachers conduct the changed classes and then observe unfamiliar pairs across two music conditions, noting readable response, balance loss, recovery, and refusals.
  • Stop or reopen: stop on unsafe or non-consensual conditions; reopen the teaching choice if transfer fails across unfamiliar partners or if the timing distinction disappears.

The conflict field changes the commitment: without it, the team would have funded a showcase and called the result practice development. The returned brief selects a social-transfer trial. It is not the performed trial or evidence that the local practice, much less the wider style, has changed.

MDPE.1:4.2 - The Call

The project joins a songbook, singing exercises, choirs, recordings, datasets, AI models, exhibition equipment, and proposed participant rules. A single “AI music” brief would hide at least three subjects: musical material and performances, a choir–model medium, and a proposed participant practice. The project can engineer them together while assigning each its own realization Work and test. Produced recordings and an installation do not establish a durable style or retained practice.

MDPE.1:4.3 - Street Tango

The source publishes concepts, exercises, and a lesson programme and reports completed teaching and participant experience. Describe both the proposed practice and the creator’s existing, bounded practice. Broader field recognition, superiority, sole origin, and long-term retention remain separate questions. A useful brief therefore distinguishes what the creator can decide and realize from what later participants and the wider Tango population may or may not retain.

MDPE.1:4.4 - A commissioned work

Once a commission has selected one musical work, the commissioning Method may already settle parties, artistic objectives, development events, deliverables, costs, and rights. Use that Method directly. Return to MDPE.1 only if the project is still confusing the commissioned work with a repeatable practice or a new medium.

The four-subject distinction is a source-informed engineering judgement. Reopen it when a direct Method supplies the same project decision with less burden or when repeated use reveals another independent subject whose omission changes project commitment.

MDPE.1:7 - Relations

  • MDPE.8 can supply the current change question. Neither pattern is a mandatory first stage for the other.
  • MDPE.21 supplies a style-production and reproduction architecture when that is the selected subject.
  • MDPE.24 supplies a decision about whether several relations now warrant treating a practice as a new whole; a project brief does not establish that transition.
  • MDPE.9, MDPE.10, MDPE.3, MDPE.5, MDPE.12, and MDPE.23 supply different realization and test results.
  • For an engineered medium or support System, use SYSE.1 for project-System focus, SYSE.2 for linked use and System concepts, SYSE.5 for functional and bearer alternatives, SYSE.6 for the architecture decision, SYSE.3 for the recursive realization network, and SYSE.4 for the assurance return. These are selected by the missing result, not used as a required sequence.
  • Use Method Engineering for specialist Method recovery, construction, composition, support, trial, and revision. MDPE adds the Music-and-Dance subject, artistic and embodied Methods, recognition, style-development, cultural continuation, and domain evidence.

MDPE.1:End

MDPE.21 - Design How a Music-or-Dance Style Is Produced and Reproduced

Pattern type: Music-and-Dance style-development architecture pattern

Public result: one selected architecture for changing how a style is produced and reproduced, with its first representative test specified

MDPE.21:0 - Use This When

Use this pattern when a project has named a new or changed musical or dance style, yet the surrounding practice still produces the predecessor. New traits may appear in a manifesto, choreography, recording, tool, class, or showcase, while familiar training, instruments, partner habits, production conventions, recognition, curation, teaching, circulation, and memory keep pulling later Work back toward the old result.

The practical difficulty is architectural. A style is not established by selecting visible traits. Repeated Music or Dance Work depends on several relations that can reinforce or obstruct one another. A performer may be capable of a new movement that partners cannot read. A composer may create a new rhythmic language that existing rehearsal and notation practices cannot reproduce. A class may transmit a phrase while an event, camera, judge, or platform selects a different quality. A recording may circulate while no receiving Agent can reconstruct a Method from it and perform representative Work that enacts that Method.

The first useful result is a decision about which local arrangement of Methods, Agents, Systems, and relations to change, why that change is expected to affect later production, and which representative Work will test the expectation.

Do not use this pattern merely to describe a style, classify a genre, write a history, or produce one work. Use the applicable analysis, composition, choreography, performance, production, or historical Method directly when no style-reproduction decision is waiting.

MDPE.21:1 - The Recurring Difficulty

A style-development project commonly starts from one of four incomplete moves:

  • trait first: specify rhythm, timbre, movement vocabulary, posture, texture, form, costume, or another visible distinction and assume later Work will reproduce it;
  • creator first: credit one Agent, school, scene, manifesto, or tool and treat that contribution as control of a distributed practice;
  • artifact first: publish a track, video, score, choreography, dataset, or tutorial and treat availability as transmission and retention;
  • institution first: build a class, festival, platform, archive, or competition and treat the supporting System as the style itself.

Each move can contribute. None identifies how later performers, teachers, listeners, dancers, partners, producers, curators, or tools will keep producing and recognizing the intended distinctions under changed conditions.

For engineering purposes, use style as an ordinary name for a reproducible cultural distinction or family of distinctions. Recover the world-side Methods, Work, capabilities, Systems, memories, and relations that matter in the current project. Do not turn the word style into one entity that creates, decides, remembers, or acts.

MDPE.21:2 - Solution

Design the local architecture that makes the intended distinctions producible, performable, recognizable, selectable, transmissible, and recoverable. These are concurrent concerns in a living practice, not stages that every project performs in one order.

MDPE.21:2.1 - Begin with a representative recurrence

Name one result that should recur after the initial novelty has passed. Examples include:

  • dancers can use a changed partnering and timing practice with unfamiliar partners at a social event;
  • musicians can learn, rehearse, vary, and perform a rhythmic or timbral language beyond the founding ensemble;
  • teachers can develop capability without reducing the style to copied figures or one recorded phrase;
  • listeners, partners, judges, curators, or sensing Systems can discriminate a relied-on difference under the conditions where their response changes later Work.

State what continuity must survive and what variation remains valuable. If the project cannot name a desired recurrence, return to MDPE.1; it may be producing one work rather than developing a style line.

MDPE.21:2.2 - Recover the current reproduction architecture

Follow one actual or representative Music-or-Dance occurrence backward into the conditions that made it possible and forward into the conditions that influence its reuse. Open only the concerns that can change the decision:

Architecture concernPractical question
Variant productionWhich Work enacting composition, choreography, improvisation, arrangement, rehearsal, or tool-supported Methods produces materially different candidates?
Performing capabilityWhich bodily, perceptual, instrumental, ensemble, partnering, or technical capabilities must function during representative Work?
Performing configurationWhich Agents, instruments, software, spaces, cues, permissions, and signal, contact, access, control, timing, or coordination relations must obtain together?
RecognitionWho must notice which difference, in what conditions, with what capability and observation?
Selection and amplificationWhich teaching, repertoire, programming, judging, peer-copying, audience, market, or platform relations make some variants more likely to recur?
Transmission and reconstructionThrough which lessons, imitation, notation, recordings, examples, models, or joint Work can a receiving Agent reconstruct a Method and perform representative Work that enacts it, or develop a useful receiving variant?
Memory and recurrenceWhich embodied capability, repertoire, archive, curriculum, instrument setting, venue practice, or recurring event makes later recovery possible?
Supporting environmentWhich schools, ensembles, venues, platforms, instruments, software, providers, archives, or event series enable or constrain the other relations?

The table is a set of architecture concerns, not a universal component list and not a first–then process. In one dance performance, bodily coordination, partner response, figure execution, stylistic enactment, event participation, and contribution to a living practice may occur simultaneously at different scales. In one music performance, fingering, phrasing, ensemble coordination, stylistic enactment, presentation, and contribution to a repertoire may likewise occur together.

Use Systems Engineering when the project changes a performer-supporting System, instrument, venue, school, platform, archive, or other engineered System. Use Method Engineering when the changed subject is a composition, training, teaching, rehearsal, improvisation, recognition, selection, transmission, or other Method. MDPE.21 adds the Music-and-Dance purpose, distinctions, simultaneous performance concerns, receiving use, and cultural consequences that make those general engineering results useful here.

MDPE.21:2.3 - Find what currently reproduces the predecessor

Compare the intended recurrence with the current architecture. Look for a relation that repeatedly defeats the new distinction. Typical examples are:

  • candidate generation changes, but training and rehearsal still develop the predecessor’s capability;
  • performers can enact the distinction, but partners, listeners, teachers, or judges cannot recognize it;
  • a workshop produces local success, but receiving Agents cannot reconstruct the practice elsewhere;
  • a platform amplifies camera-ready hooks while the project needs partner response, long form, or live musical variation;
  • an archive retains records while embodied capability, instruments, venues, or teaching Methods disappear;
  • one school stabilizes a useful practice but its authority, access, or incentives suppress valuable variants.

Name the observed relation and the consequence it has for Work. Do not call a whole population, market, platform, or culture “the bottleneck” when the project has not identified a changeable relation.

MDPE.21:2.4 - Develop several architecture candidates

Do not let the first plausible intervention define the architecture. Develop materially different candidates. For example:

Candidate emphasisChange consideredWhat it may reveal
Capability-firstChange drills, embodied correction, listening practice, rehearsal, or ensemble training.Whether performers can enact the distinction in representative Work.
Recognition-firstChange examples, comparison tasks, partner cues, judging or curation, and how learner, partner, listener, judge, or curator observations are used in later teaching or selection.Whether a relied-on Agent can discriminate the distinction and use that observation in the next Work.
Transmission-firstChange teaching, joint practice, notation, demonstrations, recordings, or reconstruction tasks.Whether another Agent can reproduce and adapt the practice rather than copy one artifact.
Circulation-and-memory-firstChange event recurrence, repertoire, archives, publishing form, access, or retrieval.Whether later Work can recover the practice under changed people, places, or media.
Medium-firstChange instrument, software, camera arrangement, platform, venue, or production System.Whether the support System enables the intended Work instead of selecting another result.
Coupled minimal changeChange two or more tightly linked relations whose separate repair would fail.Whether the joint change resolves a conflict that neither local repair can resolve alone.

These are candidate emphases, not prescribed kinds. A useful candidate states the Systems and Methods it changes, the Agents whose Work or capability is involved, the direct signal, contact, access, teaching-use, observation-use, selection, or other relations changed, the authority and consent needed, the expected effect, and the earliest observation that could defeat it.

MDPE.21:2.5 - Select a bounded change and specify its first test

Choose the smallest architecture change that can alter the waiting decision. A project can change a class, tool, event, repertoire, recording practice, platform feature, recognition task, or relation among them. It cannot decide by itself that a wider population has recognized, selected, transmitted, or retained the result.

Specify the representative Music or Dance Work that would test the candidate. The test must vary at least one condition that the style-development claim must survive: performer, partner, ensemble, teacher, venue, instrument, repertoire item, audience, medium, or time. Name the observations of the intended difference and unwanted side effects, and the next decision they can change.

The architecture decision can close with the chosen arrangement and this specified test. Carrying out the selected change and test is further Work, using MDPE.15 or the applicable direct Method. A claim about tested recurrence requires observations of the relevant later Work. Keep project choice, performed intervention, observed change, and later distributed uptake as separate claims.

MDPE.21:3 - First Useful Result

A style-production and reproduction decision can be recorded compactly:

  • Desired recurrence: [what Music or Dance Work should remain possible beyond the first example].
  • Continuity and variation: [what must remain recognizable; what may or should vary].
  • Current reproduction: [the Methods, Agents, Systems, and relations that now reproduce the practice].
  • Defeating relation: [the observed relation that pulls later Work toward another result].
  • Architecture candidates: [at least two materially different changes considered].
  • Selected local change: [the Methods, Systems, and direct signal, contact, access, teaching-use, observation-use, selection, or other relation to change; the Agent authorized to decide].
  • Expected Work effect: [what should become possible or more reliable in representative Work].
  • First test: [representative Work, varied condition, observation, and decision it can change].
  • Outside the claim: [population-wide recognition, selection, spread, retention, or causal effect not yet observed].
  • Stop or reopen: [missing authority, capability, support, evidence, or adverse effect that defeats the choice].

This result is an architecture decision for a bounded project. It is not the style, the cultural practice, the performed intervention, or evidence that a population later retained the change.

MDPE.21:4 - Worked Cases

MDPE.21:4.1 - Selecting an architecture for local Zouk recurrence

A local project wants unfamiliar partners to reproduce a changed timing and partner-response distinction in social Dance Work. Current classes teach fixed sequences with familiar partners, and the event rewards a polished showcase. Two architecture candidates change different relations:

Candidate architectureConstituent Methods and SystemsProposed or observed relations relevant to recurrence
Choreography-and-showcaseA choreographer fixes phrases; teachers reproduce them; familiar pairs rehearse; a camera and event present the result.In this unselected candidate, the phrase description or video would be used by teachers in teaching Work; familiar pairs would perform repeated-pair rehearsal Work; and event selectors would use camera-facing observations when choosing showcase material. These are proposed relations, not claims that they currently obtain or cause recurrence.
Partnered-recurrenceTeachers use embodied capability tasks and cue-response exercises; dancers rotate partners and music; observers watch supervised social Work; teachers revise tasks and variants.The selected trial requires teachers to use capability tasks in teaching Work, rotating pairs to perform cue-response Dance Work with changed partners and music, and named observers to report observations of that social Work. It proposes that teachers later use those reports when revising tasks and variants. These are trial requirements and proposed later-use relations; observation during and after the trial establishes which ones obtained. The project tests whether the arrangement supports recurrence with unfamiliar partners; causal contribution remains a trial hypothesis.

The project selects the partnered-recurrence architecture because the waiting decision concerns social use with unfamiliar partners. The choreography-and-showcase row remains an unselected proposal. The selected architecture is also a trial hypothesis: the project has not yet established that its teaching, partner-rotation, observation, or later-use relations cause recurrence. The selected first change is a six-week rotating-partner and varied-music teaching trial, followed by supervised social Work. Observers record readable response, balance, recovery, refusal, and whether the intended timing survives. Failure returns to the capability or cue relation; success supports only the local architecture decision, not wider Zouk recognition or retention.

MDPE.21:4.2 - Choreo-camps and short-video selection

A travelling workshop network may connect teachers, cities, learners, cameras, video archives, status, and later bookings. The network can reproduce front-facing phrases, clean synchronization, short hooks, and camera-legible detail even when teachers describe a broader dance practice.

The project may compare a camera-and-publication change, a change in how teachers use learner observations, and a coupled candidate that also changes how learners reuse material outside the recorded group. The first test is not view count alone. It observes whether receiving dancers can learn, vary, and perform the intended qualities in another class or event, and whether the changed publication arrangement still selects the same narrow result.

MDPE.21:4.3 - The Call as a medium-and-practice case

The project joins a songbook, singing exercises, choirs, recordings, datasets, AI models, exhibition equipment, and proposed participant relations. Those elements can produce works without yet establishing a reproducible music practice or style line.

Architecture candidates may emphasize choir capability, model-and-dataset interaction, receiving-group teaching, or exhibition circulation and memory. A representative test asks whether another configured group can learn, adapt, and perform the intended musical relations under stated conditions. Produced recordings, publicity, and one successful installation remain different from later cultural recognition or retention.

MDPE.21:4.4 - One commissioned work

If the decision concerns one selected composition, choreography, recording, or performance, use the direct domain and project Methods. Do not enlarge the work into style-development architecture unless later reproduction across variants, performers, conditions, or generations is part of the intended result.
