MDPE.5 - Integrate Production and Presentation for Performed Music-or-Dance Work

Pattern type: Music-and-Dance production-and-presentation integration pattern Public result: one bounded occurrence of Music-or-Dance Work (U.Work), with the production and presentation relations that enabled its intended use, any containing event and artifacts kept separate, and unresolved limits stated

MDPE.5:0 - Use This When

Use this pattern when the direct Music or Dance performance Method and the needed production, venue, sound, recording, access, safety, publication, and operations Methods have supplied—or can supply—their own results, but the project has not yet shown that those results can work together for one intended Music-or-Dance Work occurrence. The unresolved question is whether production and presentation will preserve the artistic or participatory relations on which the intended use depends.

The recurring danger is local success with a failed whole. A costume works as a constructed object but blocks a movement. A camera records the stage but hides the relation between live code and sound that the audience was meant to encounter. A sound system operates but masks a timing relation on which partner Dance depends. A venue protects its operations by changing participation into passive viewing. Every specialist can complete valid Work while the performed Music or Dance fails its intended use.

The first useful result identifies one intended U.Work occurrence, its performers and intended participants or audience, the artistic or participatory relations that must survive production, the direct results already available, and the one unresolved relation most likely to prevent useful performance or presentation.

Use the direct performance, social-dance, event, stage, venue, sound, light, recording, streaming, accessibility, safety, publication, and operations Methods for their own results. Use this pattern only for the remaining Music-and-Dance integration problem: whether those results jointly enable the intended Work and receiving use without silently changing either.

Do not use this pattern when:

  • material still needs to be created, interpreted, improvised, or compared (MDPE.9, MDPE.11);
  • performer capability or the performing whole is the current difficulty (MDPE.10, MDPE.3);
  • one direct production Method already returns the performed Music-or-Dance Work occurrence, receiving conditions, artifacts, limits, and next decision for this use;
  • only a generic venue, safety, platform, organization, or operations result is missing; or
  • the Music-or-Dance Work already occurred and the question concerns observation, judgement, recognition, selection, or cultural continuation (MDPE.12, MDPE.13, MDPE.19).

MDPE.5:1 - The Recurring Difficulty

The central subject in this pattern is one bounded Music-or-Dance U.Work occurrence performed by named Agents. The Work enacts the applicable direct Music or Dance Method. The performers can be people, a pair, an ensemble, or another performing Agent such as an autonomous robot.

Distinguish that Work from a score, choreography, rehearsal result, capable performer, configured instrument, working technical System, or announcement. A recording file, stream, publication, event series, style, and later cultural practice are also distinct from the performed Work.

Production, venue operation, recording, moderation, curation, and publication are other Work occurrences, even when some happen at the same time and one Agent contributes to several.

A concert, party, milonga, competition, festival, class, exhibition, or online session can contain or otherwise coordinate several Music-or-Dance Work occurrences. The containing event is not identical to any one of them. In social Dance, both partners perform and receive one another’s actions; a passive audience is not required.

Three collapses make later decisions unreliable:

  • preparation becomes performed Work: rehearsal or technical readiness is reported as though the intended Work happened;
  • artifact becomes performed Work: a file, photograph, sensor trace, or stream is reported as the historical Work occurrence;
  • availability becomes response: access, attendance, or a view count is reported as recognition, value, uptake, selection, or retention.

The production arrangement can also take control unnoticed. Venue, camera, competition format, platform metric, or operating convenience changes movement, sound, interaction, or access, while no one names the trade-off or the Agent who may decide it. Stage-front assumptions then make a party, jam, battle, improvised duet, or participatory performance look like a defective theatre production.

MDPE.5:2 - Solution

Use a bounded production-and-presentation unfolding. It is a useful order for the Work, not a hierarchy of Methods and not a claim that all production proceeds in one sequence.

MDPE.5:2.1 - Name one intended Music-or-Dance Work occurrence and its use

State:

  • the intended Music-or-Dance U.Work occurrence and, only when it changes the decision, its containing event;
  • the performers and their direct Music or Dance Method;
  • the intended participants, partners, audience, recording users, or other recipients;
  • what those people must be able to do: participate, hear a relation, see a process, encounter a work, use a recording, or something else;
  • the musical, movement, interaction, authorship, or participation qualities that production must preserve; and
  • who may decide artistic changes, who governs safety and permission, and who can refuse or stop participation.

Choose a grain that changes the decision. A festival organizer may need to coordinate a programme containing several Work occurrences; a social-dance pair may need one dance inside the party; a recording team may need one performed take and its relation to the later published artifact. Keep each Work occurrence identifiable even when the production decision spans the containing event.

MDPE.5:2.2 - Bring in only results that can change that use

Check compatibility with the same intended Work occurrence, time, material, performers, conditions, and use. Examples of relevant results include:

  • enacted material or interpretation from MDPE.11;
  • demonstrated capability from MDPE.10 and an established performing whole from MDPE.3;
  • a venue, floor, medium, sound, light, costume, prop, instrument, recording, stream, access, safety, permission, operating, or publication result from its direct Method.

Do not replace a missing result with a plan or description. Bring in a result only when it can alter the intended Work occurrence, its use, or the next production decision.

MDPE.5:2.3 - Find production choices that change Music or Dance

At each load-bearing relation, ask what a locally reasonable production choice changes for the performer or participant. Useful probes include:

  • Can performers hear, see, feel, or predict the cues their Method needs?
  • Does costume, prop, instrument, stage, floor, latency, or camera position change feasible movement or timing?
  • Does the arrangement preserve partner response, improvisation, visible process, spatial relation, or performer control when one of these carries the intended meaning?
  • Can intended participants enter, understand conditions, take part, refuse, and leave safely?
  • Does recording or streaming preserve the relation needed by its later use, or only a visually or audibly convenient fragment?

When the answer exposes a conflict, compare alternatives in the language of the affected Music or Dance Work. Keep safety, permission, artistic authority, participant rights, and technical feasibility distinct. One does not automatically override the others merely because its specialist reports first.

MDPE.5:2.4 - Test the riskiest relation in representative conditions

Use rehearsal, sound check, floor trial, costume run, camera test, network test, access walk-through, or another direct probe. Test the relation most likely to invalidate the intended use, not the easiest subsystem.

For example, test whether dancers can change direction safely at expected floor density, whether a performer can hear a timing cue at event volume, whether the audience can see the live coding rather than only projected output, or whether a recorded form preserves the rhythmic event used by a later learner.

The probe returns an observation and a production decision. It does not establish artistic value, audience recognition, or later cultural effect.

MDPE.5:2.5 - Perform the Music-or-Dance Work and state what actually became available

Perform under the direct domain Method and operate the chosen presentation arrangement. If conditions change during Work, use the applicable domain Method and bounded situation-responsive steering; do not turn the planned unfolding into a script that overrides present facts.

After the boundary, state separately:

  • the performed Music-or-Dance U.Work occurrence, performers, material or interpretation, and actual conditions;
  • the containing event or production relation, if it matters;
  • how intended participants or audience members could actually encounter or use the performed Work;
  • direct artifacts such as recordings, programme items, photographs, code states, or sensor traces;
  • any later publication Work and the resulting publication occurrence;
  • deviations, failed relations, unsupported claims, and the next decision.

An artifact is not the performed Work occurrence. Publishing an artifact does not recreate that Work. Availability does not establish attention, response, recognition, selection, or cultural continuation.

If the intended Music-or-Dance Work did not occur or could not serve the intended use, return the missing condition, the use it blocked, and an observable condition for trying again. A cancelled performance, inaccessible stream, unusable recording, or unsafe floor can still support a useful next decision without being renamed a success.

MDPE.5:3 - First Useful Result

Performed-work integration result

  • Intended Work occurrence and use: [bounded Music-or-Dance Work; what participants or audience members needed from it].
  • Performers and direct Method: [person, pair, ensemble, or performing Agent; Music or Dance Method].
  • Relations that had to survive production: [musical, movement, interaction, authorship, participation].
  • Direct results used: [only the specialist results compatible with this Work and use].
  • Representative probe: [risky relation, conditions, observation, resulting choice].
  • What occurred: [the U.Work occurrence, material or interpretation, and actual conditions].
  • What became available: [participation, encounter, access, delivery, or artifact use that actually obtained].
  • Containing event, artifacts, and publication: [kept separate from the historical Work occurrence].
  • Limits and next decision: [missing relation, unsupported claim, or observable retry condition].

MDPE.5:4 - Worked Cases

MDPE.5:4.1 - The Call: a human–AI choral medium

The Call joined common musical material, fifteen vocal ensembles or choirs, a recording protocol, a dataset, bespoke models, production, and exhibition. Training a model or recording a choir was not the whole artistic result. The production question was whether those relations together made the intended human–AI choral medium available without replacing it with a technically convenient model demonstration.

The reported choral Work occurrences, recordings, dataset, models, and exhibition are different results. The source does not establish a universal production Method, recognized new style, comparative cost, or durable cultural continuation.

MDPE.5:4.2 - TYMYLYS: a modern-Dance production

The NDT production of Tell Your Mom You Love Your Skin combined a guest choreographer and design team, dancers, costume and technical capabilities, suppliers, venue, final rehearsal, film, archive, and touring constraints. Costume and hanging wooden elements had to meet aesthetic, movement, material, robustness, and transport needs. Final rehearsal integrated light, sound, stage, and Dance before the premiere.

Choreography, costume construction, lighting, sound, stage, touring, film, archive, systems engineering, organization, and operations kept their own Methods and results. The shared MDPE.5 move was to test where those results changed what dancers could enact and what the audience could encounter. Later reviews and the artistic director’s judgement are observations for MDPE.12, not parts of the performed Dance Work.

MDPE.5:4.3 - A social-dance integration trial

This constructed project example illustrates the result. A weekly West Coast Swing organizer must decide whether to open the next party at the planned floor density after moving to a smaller room. The intended Music-or-Dance Work is one representative three-minute pair dance inside the party. The partners must be able to hear the timing, maintain partner-readable response and their slots, adapt movement to nearby pairs, decline any figure, and leave safely.

The partners’ direct West Coast Swing Method, the DJ’s music and playback result, the venue’s room and electrical result, and the organizer’s conduct and emergency provisions are kept primary. WSDC social-floor guidance supplies slot orientation, adaptation to available space and nearby dancers, partner attention, refusal, and safe stopping. CDSS venue guidance supplies questions about floor, capacity, sound, access, equipment, staffing, and contingency. Neither result shows that this pair can dance under the assembled conditions. The riskiest relation is therefore expected floor density to partner-readable timing and safe slot use.

During a representative floor trial, ten volunteer pairs dance to the planned track at event volume. In the first configuration, pairs at the far side report losing the pulse, two slots repeatedly cross the traffic line, and several dancers shorten movement enough to break the intended elastic response. The organizer refuses the planned configuration, re-aims the speakers, marks a no-dance passage, and lowers the admitted floor density. A second trial lets the representative pair complete the track with readable timing and no slot crossings observed.

The performed result is that pair’s bounded Dance Work occurrence under the second configuration. The containing party trial coordinates ten pair Work occurrences. The sound-check record, floor sketch, and short video are artifacts, not the performed Dance Work. The trial made participation under those conditions available; it did not establish artistic value, whole-scene recognition, long-term safety, or cultural continuation. The organizer keeps the lower density for the next party and reopens the decision if attendance, room layout, music, or incident reports change the relation.

MDPE.5:4.4 - Algorave guidance without performed local Music Work

Algorave practitioner guidance can shape a programme and production brief: a dance-event setting, adequate sound, visible algorithmic process, varied technologies, a diverse programme, affordable access, conduct, accessibility, and community contact. It does not supply local collaborators, performer Methods, venue, costs, authority, capability, or performed Music Work. Use the guidance to prepare the local event; establish what occurred from that event’s Work and observations.

MDPE.5:4.5 - Recording and publication

A singer performs one studio take. The take is a performed Music U.Work occurrence. The audio file is a direct artifact. Editing and mastering produce later artifacts. Publishing one master is further Work and creates a publication occurrence under stated access conditions. Access does not establish listening or recognition.

MDPE.5:4.6 - Shimon and its development team

When Shimon autonomously continues a composition and performs marimba Work within the supported conditions, it is the performing Agent for that bounded Work. People configure the robot, organise and operate the concert, and choose later changes to the practice. That performed Music Work occurrence does not make Shimon the producer, curator, cultural selector, or practice-developing Agent.

MDPE.5:4.7 - Direct-Method stop

A small acoustic duo uses a maintained local performance-and-venue Method that already identifies performers, material, room, permission, safety, performed Work occurrence, recording, audience access, limits, and next decision. Use that result directly. Return to MDPE.5 only when another medium, participant arrangement, specialist interface, or intended use creates the integration problem.

Across these forms, test relations where otherwise valid specialist results change the Music-or-Dance Work or its intended use. Use a direct Method when it already returns the complete result.

Reconsider how to integrate the results if a direct field Method offers the same result with less burden, or a representative Music-or-Dance case defeats a relied-on integration assumption.
