OCE.12:5.2 - A mentor who is not a manager

In a member-governed standards association, a prospective facilitator is learning to lead an evidence-challenge discussion: elicit the disputed claim and its grounds, check with the participants that their positions have been restated accurately, and help them identify the evidence question to answer next. The learner observes a qualified colleague, then practises facilitating a discussion of a difficult disagreement with that colleague’s feedback.

On a new practice case, the mentor observes those steps without giving prompts. The participants confirm the restatement and the question to investigate. This is evidence that the learner can perform those steps in the conditions observed. The pair uses it to plan a comparable editorial discussion with the mentor available for help.

The facilitator takes on that discussion under the association’s agreed volunteer commitments and bylaws, with access to the evidence being discussed. In the editorial episode, the facilitator helps the members frame a question about whether a cited source supports a disputed clause. A member qualified to assess the source agrees to perform that check and return the findings for the editorial decision. The elected chair retains the decisions reserved to that office within its current term and remit.

If the learner cannot restate the objection accurately or needs the mentor to form the inquiry question, the mentor identifies the missed step and the help still needed. The pair practises that step again; the editorial discussion can proceed with a capable colleague leading or with the learner receiving that help.

The association requests any missing permission to use evidence from the party entitled to grant it. A participant who needs employer time obtains the employer’s agreement. The group defers or revises only the work that depends on an unavailable permission or time allocation.

When applying OCE.12 in a hospital, obtain the applicable clinical and patient-safety permissions, comply with staffing and fatigue limits, and ensure the required privacy protections are in place. Training grants no permission for patient-facing work.
